The Chimpanzee house has been shut the last few days (not sure about today) as they are intergrating two new chimps, does anyone know whether these will be for breeding purposes? More new additions like these two chimps are always exciting
Well given the fact that the zoo stopped breeding until they had DNA tested, the Chimp group and the fact that they have, now completed the testing and have now spoken with the studbook about what to do.They have moved some out and brought some in,so I would be very surprised if the long term aim wasn't to bred from what will in the very long term be a pure group of Western Chimpanzee!

Upper Aviarys in the Tropical Realm,if you reach the Luzon Lowland Scops Owl aviary you have gone past them!

Thanks. I've only been around the upper aviaries once since the Scops Owl moved in... Just to see the owl. I always presumed the other aviaries up there mainly contained tariatic (sp?) hornbills.

The Visayan Tariatic Hornbills have never been kept in any of the upper aviarys!

So I guess from that comment you have never seen the Pink-headed Fruit Dove either then?

Sorry, they are in the lower aviaries aren't they? I've just googled the fruit dove and no I've never seen that either. I'll make a visit up there next time I'm in the zoo, I rarely venture up that end of the tropical realm as generally I'm more interested in the reptiles than the birds although I like parrot, toucan and hornbill species.

Does anyone have any more details about these Chimpanzee moves e.g. where they have gone to or come from, how many are involved and the sexes?
Sorry I was told but I have forgotten what I was told,as I normally switch off when talking about Chimps,as they are a species that just doesn't do anything for me!

Thank you for clearing that up, that sounds like good news to me :) Close up the Chimps are a fantastic sight, swinging and jumping they really are fantastic animals.

0.2 (think it was KanKan and Whitney) went to Boras, Sweden in May. The new arrivals (0.2) came from Germany (don't know which collection) in July

They will likely update the signage once everyone is settled so you might have a clearer picture then

Thanks for that. It will be interesting to see how they are managed if in fact breeding pure West Africans is the intended outcome of these moves. For example, will they form a smaller subgroup with just the pure ones, or still keep a single large group but prevent breeding from all those that aren't pure.

1.3 Pink Pigeon (Nesoenas mayeri) have arrived from the U.S.A.

Are these on show Bongorob? I hope to visit a week today.

They kept them at the zoo about 20 years ago if I recall correctly, as studying the ecology of their environment was a project as part of my degree at the time. Unfortunately this didn't include a field trip to Mauritius :(

Pink Pigeons are not on show, sorry about that.

A pair arrived during 2014, and they were previously kept between 1985 and 2007.

They did not have a great breeding record at Chester, so the plan is to foster any young to Java Doves.

Good evening, I am just going to throw this out there, as Islands progresses and the Sumatran Orangutans are added to Monsoon Forest in the near future where does everyone see Realm Of The Red Ape in the future, as this is such a fantastic exhibit and it is one of the best Orangutan exhibits in the world in my opinion where do Chester go with this exhibit now with just the Borneo Orangutans left in their along with the gibbons, snakes etc. Will Chester continue with just the Borneo's and spread them out into some of the Sumatran Orangs enclosures and add to the Borneo collection? Or can you see a different type of primate housed their? Maybe Chester will build a new house specially for the Borneo's and knock down ROTRA, I don't know where they will go with it so it will be interesting to hear fellow Zoochatters thoughts on this:)

I just wanted to thank the gang at Chester for a truly memorable day on Friday, friendly and informative and a bloody good laugh at times.
And Tim if you are watching, thanks for opening the Monsoon forest, really appreciated, my visit would not have been complete without it.

I'd like to see ROTRA concentrate on being a bornean themed building.
The Sun Bears could go into one of outside enclosures, and Sunda clouded leopards added to the collection and going in the tall netted enclosures that you see first and last inside.
The secondary smaller enclosures could exhibit birds and reptiles found on the island, just like they at present.

bornean Orang Utans will move into the Sumatran Orang Utan side of RORA. the rest will be demolished.

That's a shame I feel Chester are missing a trick not using this enclosure to house other primates as in my eyes their isn't much to change apart from a little bit of modernisation, ROTRA will look abit weird having just the one set of enclosures with the rest being knocked down, what used to be a state of the art exhibit is now being decreased but it is a sign of the times as it's nearing the 10 year old sell by date and the enclosure in monsoon forest is an improvement for the Sumartrans, atleast Chester always want to do better and not just stagnate but some things are worth keeping and I feel ROTRA is one of those things to keep:)
