Also the website has updated, to me so far the only new addition is info on the zoo's Warthog group. Though I'll keep digging.

2 questions;
Where are the warthogs at Chester?
What is the time frame for the opening on the new extention of islands? Tapirs and sun bears etc

To the right of the entrance gates. Walk towards the cafe and there in the paddock between that and the old Rhino house

Islands extension will be (hopefully) open in Summer 2017

SMR may be referring to the Wolverines?
I don't think the Binturong were on show in August, although someone may put me right on that.

I think you must be correct, the description of the enclosure certainly fits the wolverine one!

Well I must say I enjoyed the first ep of the Secret life of the Zoo very interesting look at the Lions and Zebras and Warthogs and cannot wait for the Orangs, Aye Aye and more next week

Female Black Rhino, Chanua (born October 2012, Magadi X Ema Elsa) has moved on to Flamingo Land

Great episode tonight, has there been success in breeding the lions to anyone's knowledge? also has anyone got any recent photos of the construction of the sun bear/tapor enclosures?

Not for quite some years; the last cub born was "Chakra" in 2008, but due to ongoing problems arising from how inbred the Asiatic Lion population is, he was PTS at a young age. The last cub which successfully reached adulthood - despite also having several problems of this nature - was Tejas in 2007.

Neither of these were born to the current pair at Chester.

No and I don't think this pair will ever breed. The site of the sun bear exhibit is difficult to see from the pathways in the zoo.

Asian Lions bred at Chester Zoo

1994 2.1
1996 3.0
1997 1.3
1998 2.1
2000 (0.1)
2007 2.2(1.2)
2008 2.0.1(1.0.1)

total 12.8.1(2.3.1)

I doubt these Lions will breed I feel a young male is needed for a successful breeding pair. I have a feeling we'll have a baby Sloth before a Lion after this weeks episode. Also did anyone else find it sad seeing baby Elinor knowing what happened to her.

Gabe is actually sired by Kifaru not Magadi :)

from the zoos website:

  • Gabe was born on January 16
  • Mum Ema Elsa is 13-years-old. She was born on 02/11/2002 and has now had three calves at Chester Zoo – Bashira, Chanua and Gabe
  • Dad Kifaru is 31-years-old (born 21/10/1984). He arrived at Chester Zoo in 2014 from Hannover Zoo in Germany. He has now sired four calves with this being his first at Chester Zoo. His other offspring are called Samira, Saya and Taco
  • The arrival of Gabe brings the total number of Eastern black rhinos at Chester Zoo to 10

I said CHANUA had left. Not Gabe
