Chester Zoo Chester Zoo 2017

Last time I visited the Brow Antler Deer where in the hard standing area next to the Spotted Deer and there appeared to be at least 2 youngsters among them.

well, the ringleader was a man "of good character" :)

I find it amazing the scam even worked. The guys who did it must have been dumbfounded - or maybe even just dumb to have thought it would work. I can just imagine them sitting around planning it, saying "so, we'll just tell the zoo they owe us this money and they'll pay it to us. How can that not fail?" "We'll have to transfer the money straight into other bank accounts though, to hide our involvement - I suggest we use bank accounts that are in our own names! Man, we are clever." "Should we take the million and hop the country, go somewhere we can't be caught? Hmm, naaaah!"

The guys are geniuses.

It's more complicated than that. A few minutes on Google and newspaper websites reveals that there is a lot of egg on a lot of faces.
The men in this case were convicted for receiving a total of less £100k, although much more than that went through one of their accounts. As the judge said, they were not primarily responsible for the fraud.
Presumably the ringleader, whoever he or she may be, was not in the dock. Unfortunately the phrase 'laughing all way to the bank' may apply to a quite number of people.
These people may, or may not, have been among the defendants in a previous trial at the Old Bailey which collapsed after a month in December 2014. This case involved a total of £37 million from the zoo and a number of other companies and institutions. Unfortunately the judge was not satisfied with the prosecution case and severely criticised the evidence from UK's National Crime Agency.

How many rhinos are left at the zoo then, and which paddocks are they in?

Assuming you just mean black rhinos...

If Embu has indeed gone then there are 3.4 left; bulls Kifaru and Magadi, cows Kitani, Ema-Elsa, Malindi and Zuri, and Ema's male calf Gabe.

Last time I visited in the onshow indoor house it was Kitani on the left and Ema-Elsa and Gabe on the right. In the offshow paddocks (visible from the car park and the meerkat statue) it was Kifaru, Malindi and Zuri. In the paddock adjacent to the warthogs it was Embu (Zuri's adolescent male calf) and in the lone rhino house (on the right as you enter the Tsavo Rhino area) it was Magadi.

This may seem like a bit of a random question, but are there any fish in the moats/pools/water areas around Chester? I am aware that there are sterlet in the sunken garden as I have been told, but from reading previous posts I have come across different zoochatters saying that they have seen a ghost carp in the chimp moat. Is there still anything like this in the zoo today?

I watched an Orang beating a bin lid sized Terrapin around 2004, I guess to break the shell for the meat inside. I informed a keeper and was told there were a few in the moats that they believed had escaped years before from m the Tropical Realm.

Visited Chester today and saw that some of the many projects around the zoo are now complete or nearly so.
The black vultures are on show in the old condor aviary, but I think all the other birds are still in Europe on the Edge.
The new aviaries beside the chimps have now been stocked as follows, reading from left to right. First aviary - Cabot's tragopan, collared partridge, blue-crowned laughing-thrush & Omei Shan liocichla: second - Vietnamese pheasant, red-tailed laughing-thrush & grey-winged blackbird: third - collared grosbeak & Reeve's pheasant: fourth - Temminck's tragopan & Lady Amherst's pheasant.
The cheetah yurt is structurally complete and has benches, but there were no cheetahs to see in the paddock.
Tuan's revamped areas in RotRA are still screened off, and the screens over the windows beside the entrance look permanent. It is possible to peep through the ones by the exit to see that the enclosure there has a new grass floor growing, but the other one has been refurbished with what looks like a woodchip floor.
The scaffolding around Oakfield House has come down, but it is still screened off.
The new Play! area is being planted and turfed. I think it will be ready soon.
Finally there are a lot of new signs and labels around the zoo. Many of them are quite informative.

I'll be interested to see if Tuan goes back on view once the refurb is done :) I hope so, but it's understandable if he doesn't!
