The new zoo magazine mentions the birth of a baby Andean bear, born in Janurary.

For any budding botanists here the zoo has opened the plant project right by the Parrot breeding centre it features a large variety of tropical and endangered plants and you can see more on the website.

Good, I wondered what they were doing with the greenhouses. I have a look around every now and again. I like the sign by the cacti saying "these plants bite"

I imagine so, probably because of the moat surrounding the bear enclosure.

That's what I was thinking.

On my last visit, I noted that the rear part of the left hand side of the bear enclosure is fenced off with mesh (and almost certainly with hot wires too) - so perhaps that is where to look for the cub .

Correct that is where they are hence my crack that you will need a big lens.

Yes that is correct. The main enclosure has a moat. No one wants little one to fall in.

I've seen the bear cub (don't ask) and it's a tremendous success for the zoo, it's just a shame that it'll only venture into the enclosure as a juvenile. Well done to all the team(s) involved.

There are eight blue-legged mantella in that vivarium, all seized animals and as such incredibly shy. However, the zoo have bred them off-show, and that stock will be transferred to the Tropical Realm and are said to be far more comfortable being viewed by the public.

The Plant Project is still not open to the public, at least it wasn't today.

I was in attendance, and aside from sending condolences to the gentleman's family, can only commend the (formerly-named) rangers, security and discovery and learning staff for how they handled the situation, not least of which was the problem of getting countless school trips out of the zoo without the children being exposed to the unfortunate events.

We take a lot of the organisation that goes into running a huge concern such as Chester Zoo for granted, but on days like this the skill and understanding shown by the various teams was outstanding.
