I keep hoping to catch a view of the bear cub, from the back of the enclosure when I cycle past on my way home. No luck so far.

Zootierliste now lists Chester as having a few new amphibian species including:
Central Bright-eyed frog, Yellow-throated frog, Coronated treefrog, and Splendid Leaf Frog. It also lists a new primate species: White-belted black-and-white ruffed lemur :)

Sorry but two of the frogs are not new species, those being Splendid Leaf Frog and Yellow-throated frog, they have been at the zoo for along time just never been on show in the case of the Trinidad Stream Frog (Yellow-throated frog) and the Splendid Leaf Frog haven;t been on show since the frog pod was in the Jaguar House!!

As for the Lemur they have been in the zoo for sometime and are even on-show,but as so often if its not labelled people dont look for it.

Tombol is the name finally given to sareki's baby as announced on Facebook about 15 minutes ago at the time of this post

Trinidad Stream Frogs arrived in 2016, hardly a long time ago

I'll be visiting Chester for the first time on Tuesday, I hope to spend all day at the zoo, so was wondering if anyone could give any advice of anything hidden away that I should look out for/anything unmissable?

Does anyone know if there's a good time to see the orangutan active? And is it likely that I will see the elephant calf out and about? Thank you if anyone can help :)

Elephants are out most of the time, normally in the morning so you can't miss them. Orangs don't really have a time when they are active but you should see them in Realm of the Red Ape or Islands.
Not much is really hidden away but UK rareties like Onager, Painted Batagur, Mouse Deer and Ploughshare Tortoise aren't to be missed :)

Don't forget the tuatara, writhed (or Mindanao writhe-billed/wrinkled as she's signposted) hornbill or aye-ayes in Tropical Realm either!!

Thank you! I'll keep my eye's peeled with all of these and hopefully I'll be lucky at Chester with the Orangs.. I never have much luck at Monkey World :p

Thank you for the advice! I'm a big fan of any species of hornbill so it would be especially exciting to see her :)

The elephants are usually brought into the house around 3 pm, which was about the time that the cloud rats were active last time I saw them, they are very hard to see most of the time - but don't forget to tell the staff on the entry gates that you will be coming back into the zoo. Don't miss the tuataras, if they aren't showing when you visit the Tropical House (I hate the word 'Realm'), don't forget to try again before you leave.

Dragons in Danger is a must see as it is one of the best exhibits in the zoo as the Komodo dragons have one of the best looking enclosures especially the male who unless he is not sleeping will come right up to the glass.A smaller dragon is kept in a spacious outdoor enclosure with plenty of enrichment provided for her.The other species on show are quite unmissable such as the Mountain chicken frogs,Montserrat tarantula and the ploughshare tortoise.

We are pretty infrequent visitors to Chester due to location so tbh I am going to be limited help here - but the good thing about the elephants is that their location means you are guaranteed two chances, one on the way in and one on the way out! I'd say you have a great chance of seeing the calf.

With limited time it can be difficult to fit everything else in if you are having to do a lot of backtracking due to no-shows. I would suggest having a look at the map and planning a route beforehand - and then prioritise who you would want to go back to if you've not had good luck on the first go round. Obviously this depends how long of a day you are planning on / how quickly you are willing to work your way round though. I hope you have a great time - let us know how you get on :)
