The entrance building, clock tower and pay booths have now all been demolished to make way for the entrance plaza development. There's a huge fence around the entire area, making it difficult to see what's going on.

But having said that, here are some photos! http://goo.gl/c4oTm (uploaded to G+ as the forum is hiccuping)

Given that it's quite recent - 15 years or so, I'd guess - what is the justification for replacing the entrance area? I'm not a regular enough visitor to know whether that side of things 'worked' at the zoo or not...

Some sad news from the zoo.

Kinza and Shendi the two female cheetah cubs have both died, from an illness they've had for a few weeks. Kinza died on the 1st and Shendi died on the 12th November.

My thoughts are with the keepers.

This is horrible and very sad news, I'm so pleased that I did get to see the whole family together outside in September.

I guess it would be an impossible task to remove any rodents from site.

This is indeed horrible news - though not entirely unexpected. Given how long they had been off-show for treatment, I had a feeling things weren't going too well.

The two brighter notes I can think of are that if they are making an announcement now, they hopefully think the other two are out of the woods, and considering how well KT seems to have taken to parenthood, we can be hopeful for the future.

Such devastating news, I can only repeat what others have said and hope that KT and the males make a full recovery.

Just a quick question but has anybody actually mentioned it was a problem caused by Rodents??

From the press release on the Chester website...

Cowpox is a common virus throughout Europe carried by wild rodents and occasionally seen in domestic cats. We believe it is most likely that one of the cubs picked this up via a wild rodent.

Director General Dr Mark Pilgrim said: “This is very sad news for all of us at the zoo and for our visitors too, who have been so enamoured with our cheetah cubs. Cowpox is a common disease and we believe one of the cubs may have come into contact with a rodent which carries it.

I found via the press release which was released today.
Thanks for this reply,it would have been nice if you could have provided a link to the press release as not everyone has the time to trawl through ,every collections websites/facebook pages or news sites to find out these things!

Sad news.

Is this a change of policy from CZ, as when the tiger cub died in the summer they said they didn't comment on cause of death?

Or a case of read between the lines on that one perhaps..

From the press release on the Chester website...

Do Chester regulars feel that there's an excessive rodent problem in the Zoo?

I have to admit that I've never forgotten seeing an enormous brown rat scurrying across the footpath near the old Condor aviary in 1994. Not that I'm knocking Chester; zoos seem to have always had a problem with rats and mice.

The cowpox is more likely to have originated in water voles than rats or mice. Voles are the primary carrier of cowpox in Europe, which in turn is most prevalent in the autumn. The zoo has an indigenous population of water voles both in the reed bed area and around Monkey Islands.

To date, I haven't seen a rat in the zoo, just mice, and then primarily in the houses.
