The large hatches lead to inside for the Aye-Aye indoor area and they don't have access out onto the island. I think the Tamarins have sleeping boxes or something.
 
There is a little shed on the island with a viewing window but I've never seen them in there and on the topic of primates has anyone seen tuan the former breeding male bornean orangutan because I haven't seen him since August and since the red panda has moved put of the netted enclosure just as you exit rotra I would assume he has access to there again

I think he may still be around because there seemed to be a lot of orang prints in the ground but it would be great if someone could confirm if the big guy is still around

Only just seen this wonderful news, thanks for sharing it. I love Madidi so I'm delighted she is a mum herself now!

He was still about in late December when I last visited.

Aung Bo is kept seperate from the herd; they have a smaller paddock behind the main one. Indali is most likely on contraception, Chester will have already taken to combating these concerns. When they have identified she is indeed cycling, they would definitely be making sure she is seperate just in case.

EEHV vaccine:

Re. the EEHV vaccine, this is the latest update on Chester Zoo’s website:

We’re at the beginning. This great collaboration of researchers has got us to the point where we have two vaccine prototypes that we can test in a pilot study. We need to confirm the vaccines are first and foremost safe, and secondly, that they can reliably stimulate an immune response.

So far, in this pilot we’ve given the vaccines to the Hi-Way herd’s bull elephant, Aung Bo, and tested small amounts of his blood for an immune system reaction. After vaccination, if we expose Aung Bo’s white blood cells to the markers of EEHV, we’d expect to see a rapid and strong immune reaction. We were encouraged to see some signs of this in the test, but it’s far too early to tell if this means the vaccine would prevent a full-scale infection

A full-scale trial awaits us now to build on this knowledge, where, in-time, we’ll learn whether this research is successful in protecting young elephants from EEHV both in the wild and in breeding programmes around the world.

I highly doubt Indali is even close to “indistinguishable from Sundara height wise” as she’s only 5 and a half years old while Sundara is a full grown 18 year old cow. It’ll be several years till Indali and Sundara are that close in size since elephant cows continue to grow into their early to mid teens.

@IndianRhino Sundara is practically fully grown,I say this as Elephant Cowes aren’t fully grown until there early too mid 20’s. This being considered Indali and Sundara are probably not that much different in height. Is it known yet if Indali is immune to EEHV or at least the strain she contracted back in 2019?

The point @IndianRhino is trying to make is that a five year old elephant is far from the same size as her adult mother. Indali is barely into adolescence and has a lot of growing to do.

If it is known, Chester haven’t disclosed this with the general public. From cases worldwide (of which there are few), I’d conclude it’s probable she’s immune to the strain she successfully recovered from.
