Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

With the ring tails they have two groups a bachelor group and a breeding group however they rotate the groups regularly e.g one day the breeding group will be on the island and the other day the breeding group will be in the walkthrough

I highly doubt that, given the level of stress that being regularly moved back and forth would inflict on both groups.

Other than your imagination, what are your sources?

I was informed by one of the keepers on my last visit that they plan to rotate both groups on the walkthrough and the island

Even if what you say is true, which I still doubt, "planning to rotate where the groups are" is not the same as "they already rotate the groups back and forth regularly" as you originally claimed :p

I was told by a volunteer recently - whether this is completely accurate is a different question - that it was currently a bachelor group in the walk-through, and an all-female group on the island. I haven’t heard anything about rotation - this is not to say that it doesn’t/won’t happen, but if it did, it wouldn’t be on a day-to-day basis, for the reasons outlined above by others.

Completely different question but as ztl Is shown as holding margay offshow if they do go onshow where would be suitable for them

Is it confirmed that the painted dogs will be moving to the cheetah enclosure cos i heard it was a possibility and thought someone had confirmed they will be moved ???

Or maybe the bush dogs can move back to there old area and the margays can go on the savannah side of the jag house with access to the outside area if only kyra the sun bear finally leaves the the collection because i feel like she's been on the jaguar cafe side for ages now and it's giving me deja vu because of when bernie the male spectacled bear was on that side while madidi was still in the zoo and we were waiting for ages for him to move back

I believe the sun bear in the jaguar house is waiting to be transferred to paradise wildlife park
That would be nice and make sense. However, Cam Whitnall of Paradise Wildlife Park posted a picture of Kyra on his Instagram on the 3rd of January. I asked him privately and someone asked in the comments if he was hinting something or if Kyra was coming to Paradise. He replied no, he just visited the other day. I am not saying it won't happen as I hope Kyra goes to Paradise Wildlife Park, I am just putting it out there.

Does anyone know how to tell the black rhinos apart ???

Kitani has quite a shorter front horn due to her ripping her horn off a few years ago after her calf fara passed away at 6 weeks and she has a bubbly texture to her skin

Zuri has really good horns and she has quite a smily mouth

Ema has very hairy ears

And malindi has a few wrinkles around her stomach

Kasulu is the smallest female

Can't tell the males apart as they aren't calves any more

But the males are
Gabe( 6 years old)
Ike (5 years old )
Jumanne (4 years old)

None of those are breeders as they are sons of the females however kitani is the only female without any offspring as her last calf hazina moved to doue la Fontaine last year

Had an e-mail inviting questions for the A.G.M.

Have submitted one asking why they are so secretive about information about births/ deaths/ arrivals/ departures.

Not expecting it to be chosen as one to be answered, but we'll see.

The Painted dogs plan I believe was to move them to the cheetah paddock during the Grasslands building and the cheetahs over to the area near the staff entrance. Mayne comely different plan now, will only know once work starts

I was told that this is still the plan of to move the Wild Dogs to the old Cheetah enclosure while Grasslands project will take place.

Does anyone know how many babirusa are at the zoo I believe there’s
A male on its own
A mum and three young
A mum and two young
And a mum and one young
Am I missing any others if so how many others are there ???

Unfortunately the babirusas are one of the only animals that I don't spend ages with but I remember seeing a mum and two piglets in islands two juveniles in the old warty pig enclosure on cheetah Bridge the male is In islands for breeding and when he isn't breeding he is on the former anoa island on cheetah Bridge and the closed boat ride which I wish the zoo brought back because it was far better than the one in islands and there is at least one babirusa with the short clawed otters by the exit of rora and there are also a few in the old anteater enclosure behind the giraffe house
