I have a full, comprehensive list of all the members from the Hi Way herd (which started in the 90's). I'll find it when I get the time.

@hari Jones Aung Bo wasn’t born at Servile Zoo. Yes Aung Bo arrived from Servile but he was born at Emmen.

Aung Bo was born on the 16/07/2001 to Naing Thein and Khaing Lwin Htoo at the Emmen Zoo. He was sent to Cologne originally 03/08/2004, then to Seville 20/04/2007, and finally to Chester 21/09/2012.

The 1995 calf was named Karha and was removed following aggression from Thi as detailed below:

On the morning of 19.12.95, parturition started and the veterinary personnel were alerted at 4.40 a.m. Due to the speed of the parturition, the keeping staff had no time in which to safely chain and rope Thai, as per the protocol during the 'false' parturition signs of 2.10.95.

Birth of a full term, female calf, "Karha" occurred at 4.56 a.m. Thai yet again became extremely aggressive towards her calf, but fortunately the calf was retrieved by the keeping staff after Thai had kicked it with her hind feet, causing it to slide under the bars into the adjacent pen, where the staff pulled it to safety.

Due to Thai's persistent, aggressive behaviour, it was deemed impossible to reintroduce the calf back to her. The long and dedicated round the clock process of hand-rearing by the keeping staff was about to begin.

Just a little more info on the Hi Way Family:

Thi (1982-2020)

0.1 Unamed (1993-1993) x Chang - killed by Thi after birth.
0.1 Karha (1995-1997) x Chang - believed to be Chester’s first case of EEHV.
0.1 Sithami (1997-2018) x Chang
1.0 Assam (2000) x Chang - currently at Budapest Zoo.
0.1 Stillborn female (2004-2004) x Chang
1.0 Raman (2006-2009) x Upali - died due to EEHV
0.1 Jumilah (2011-2013) x Upali - died due to EEHV
0.1 Nandita (2015-2018) x Aung Bo - died due to EEHV
1.0 Anjan (2018) x Aung Bo

Sithami (1997-2018) Chang x Thi

0.1 Sundara (2004) x Upali
1.0 Nayan (2010-2013) x Upali - died due to EEHV
0.1 Bala (2013-2015) x Upali - died due to EEHV
1.0 Aayu (2017-2018) x Aung Bo - died due to EEHV

Sundara (2004) Upali x Sithami

1.0 Hari (2012-2015) x Upali - died due to EEHV
0.1 Indali (2016) x Aung Bo
0.1 Riva (2020) x Aung Bo

Then, there was also Jangoli of course, who had a few calves at Chester in the early 2000’s. She’s unrelated to the Hi Way herd.

Jangoli (1968)

0.1 Stillborn (1998-1998) x Chang
1.0 Po Chin (2000) x Chang - at Pairi Diaza
1.0 Tunga (2004-2017) x Chang - died at Ieper Zoo

Jangoli was sent to Spain in 2014 after not getting along well with the new bull, Aung Bo.

I’ll try to get up some more info later on the other former and current herd members I haven’t mentioned yet; such as the former bulls, Jubilee, Chang, Upali and the cows, Sheba, Judy, Maya ect.

Did jangoli move because of her relationship with Aung bo or her relationship with the cows because while she was still there she always had tension with the other elephants because I remember when I was there once as soon as the females came out she always had a bit of tension with thi almost as if she was challenging her for the roll of matriarch because if I remember correctly wasn't she quite a dominant cow

Jangoli was exported because she couldn’t be integrated with Aung Bo. This meant she was having to be housed separately whenever Aung Bo was with the herd.

By all accounts, Jangoli lived amicably with the other cows but since the strongest bonds are between those who share a matrilineal line, her breakaway from the herd would have had significantly less impact (on both her and the others) than of one of the cows from Thi’s family.

By the looks of things, Chesters elephants seem to have been greatly affected by the EEHV. Is there a particular reason for this or is it just sort of a bad luck kind of thing. Hopefully, with indali pulling through EEHV they coukd use this treatment fir further Elephants which might be positive for the virus. Has there been any other herds in the UK which have been so greatly affected by EEHV.

They have had terrible luck. Chester's first surviving eight calves all did well, although one, Karha (1995-1997) possibly died from EEHV, which would've been Chester's first case.

From 2009, they've been plagued by horrible luck. Out of their next ten calves, seven have died from the virus, with at least one (Indali surviving). A great success story, and hopefully Chester can build on the knowledge of Indali's survival, especially with Riva entering the danger years.

I thought Raman was chesters first case of eehv

According to a few people on here, Karha died from congenital digestive system abnormalities, which were aggravated by her swallowing a stone.

An interesting note I found from @Pertinax re. the reason Thi accepted her third calf (while rejecting the first two) was because she gave birth with Sheba present. This calmed Thi, with Sheba giving her the support a first time mother would usually need. Thi in turn partially adopted Sithami’s calf, Sundara, providing the same support Sheba had given her.

Certainly Karha swallowed a stone...

I don't remember writing that about Thi and Sheba but I must have got it from a reliable source.;) Thi was a very nervous female when she was younger, London could not cope with this and I think its the main initial reason she was transferred to Chester.

I also remember reading this on here although I didn't take note of who wrote it something must have changed and maybe Sheba was the answer as to why Thai was able to rear Sithami having rejected her first 2 calves. I like to believe that this was the case and so personally I think Sheba helped to ensure the Hi Way family succeeded as they did.
