Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and questions 2023

As far as I remember that was the plan, in my opinion it was not a good idea. The only thing I think should be housed with lions is other lions.

Yes when I first saw the plans, I presumed maybe, they would let the mongoose into the indoor enclosure when they lions were outside, still thought it was an odd idea

That might have been the plan jde7582, it's such a long time since I heard about it, it would be more likely.

That’s just insane, why would the zoo even want to attempt to mix the mongoose and lions. Seems so strange to me

Zoo Chleby (Czech rep.) keeps 2,0 lions and banded mongoose group of 10 together. Or better to say, mongooses have free access to lions enclosure (but not vice versa). It works since year 2020 and it´s mongoose gang that bullies the lions so far. I dont know it´s good or bad idea to mix them.

Jana's post got me thinking.

Lions have been mixed with various species. This has surprised me.

Search Zoolex for

MIXED-SPECIES EXHIBITS WITH CARNIVORANS III.
Mixed-species exhibits with Cats (Felidae) and Hyenas
(Hyaenidae).

I can't paste a link, sorry.

Link here. Even if you give the mongooses space to get away, the history of the combination doesn't make it seem fair to keep them with lions.

From the looks of it, mixed species exhibits with lions are overwhelming unsuccessful. But I suppose it depends on the temperament and ages of the lions in question.

Does anyone know whether Aung bo as moved on yet because I didn't see him at all today
From what I heard at the start of April I wouldn't put money on him having already been moved on, but he could well have moved already (the zoos intention is for him to be gone soon). Maybe someone could try find out for sure on their next visit?

Is Jeff the name of the new baby boy? Also has there been any update on the fathers of the recent offspring (Stevie, Annie, Toyah)?

The other two individuals you missed were Layla and Wilson.

I have managed to compile a list of the current individuals Chester have and will post and update it later when I get some more info.

Chimp question - Does anyone know what happened to Kiki who arrived with Vila back in 2016?

I think she died soon after she arrived. Not sure though, I don't follow the chimps.

Current Chimp Population List:

Spent a lot of time searching through the European studbook to find all of this information as I've always been keen to find out more about Chester's illustrious chimp group.

Thought it's worth sharing as I've seen many posts over the years concerning Chester's chimps and wanted to create a complete list of the chimps Chester currently have.

Each chimp will be grouped in their 'family grouping' much like they would be actually. The order of each family is simply from the biggest family group to the smallest.

The heading for each family group is the founder female of each line - the only exception here is of course the wild born Boris who still has many descendants within the current population.

They have 22 chimps in total; 8 males and 14 females across 9 different family groups.

I found a paper on-line that states "Kiki" arrived in August 2015 and died October 2016.

"...Vila arrived at the zoo in August 2015 with another adult female, Kiki, who subsequently died in October 2016...."

Question regarding the experiences, do the rhino ones run later into the year than July? Currently the website only shows for this month, and we're intending to do one in September (annoyingly the okapi one sold out for the week we wanted).
