Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Something visitors have been saying for at least 40 years! :D

On a slightly more serious note, I think there is a "sweet spot" where a zoo is just the right size for a day visit and I wonder if Chester is at risk of exceeding it?.

Surely it has already been exceeded if you cant see it all in one day?
The number of casual visitors who can give up the time, funds and interest to have to stay overnight (especially if they have young children) must be very small.

Having been last weekend as a first time visitor, we had the most amazing time for two days, with the long opening hours, but I think if you were only coming for a day it must feel incredibly rushed trying to see everything.

Seems like with an expansion of the places to stay as well as another large development, it would turn into the perfect weekend destination

Only if you are VERY interested, quite (VERY?) wealthy and have a whole weekend to spend.
This is in danger of becoming very elitist.

I think as long as they stay exceptional and so much better than any other zoo in the country, there will be people willing to stay for a weekend, see Pairi Daiza and of course any large theme park

Chester has definitely already exceded it. On my visit, both tropical houses, all walkthrough aviaries and the bat house were closed, but I still needed two full days. Granted, this was in the winter, and it was only open for 6 hours on either day, but even in the summer it is only open for 8 hours. I get that the northern climate doesn't help compared to continental zoos, but I feel as though the zoo could at least open an hour earlier and stay open an hour later in august.

We 'did' the zoo in a day back in 2023, although did get there at opening and I suspect probably missed something along the way.

We want to go again within the next 1-2 years; it would be nice if they did a 2-day ticket! Other than that, it's actually looking semi-economic to buy a membership, esp. as we're thinking of doing the Highlands this year, and we also don't live far from Hertfordshire Zoo.

Tbf it's now £33 on the door for Whipsnade, which we love - but Chester obviously has more on show etc.

This is why membership is so popular at Chester. Multiple visits to Chester plus free entry to a number of other zoos. I believe there are now over 150,000 members.

Agree, for our two weekend days, it was only a bit more expensive to get the membership and we will definitely get to Colchester during the year, presumably also back to Chester for a week. Main issue for me tbh are the high train prices but that’s a UK issue, not Chester‘s fault

Horrendous price at Whipsnade for a collection so lacking in diversity!

South, innit ;)

We have membership and basically if we go 3 times (although we've just upgraded to gold, so maybe 4 times) to either Whipsnade or London, it pays for itself. And we're planning on going to Whipsnade 3 times in the next 10 days so....!

Must be plenty of wealthy zoo visitors then.... and if there are, why are they also complaining about the price, as commented on up thread.
Looks as though I was right when I mentioned elitist, maybe...

I think there are two types of visitors, people who are relatively local and thus don’t mind not seeing everything in one day (but will complain about the price, which tbh is a national sport at this point for basically anything) as well as people drawn by Chester‘s reputation for whom the travel there is the largest expense, making the entry to the zoo less important

Had my first look at Heart of Africa today.

And yep, it's good. The Hidden Savannah building is excellent - I went straight there at opening which was a good shout as it got very busy later, but I don't think this will be an issue once it's not brand new (except maybe if you want to climb in the locust Land Rover!). In fact, with one or two exceptions (Fruit Bat Forest notably) the rest of the zoo felt quiet if anything - rather than being a super busy day it felt like a normal sunny day but with more of the people in one place than usual.

But yeah, the new area is good - in classic Chester style there are a few pinch points that feel like they easily could have been avoided (signs or rocks sticking out), and a few bits where the theming suddenly gives way to practicality in a bit too visible a way, but otherwise - very little to criticise.

In keeping with Chester's general recent trends there are some really choice species alongside the ABCs and EEP species - the Southern African Spiny Mice (Acomys spinosissimus) are a real rarity with only 7 holders on ZTL, for instance.

The main savannah animals are clearly still in the process of being introduced and there was a lot of keeper monitoring and activity all day - and for example the Roan were confined to the hardstanding for the morning but did get out on the paddock in the afternoon.

One thing I really did like - the structures and theming of the retained wild dog/hyrax section have been integrated really well into the new area, with the rockwork style carried on. It felt far more integrated than I was expecting, almost to the point of being slightly eerie when you suddenly find yourself somewhere familiar in the middle of all the newness. :D

I’m visiting the zoo on the 4th May and i have a few questions.

1. Are the aviaries expected to be open by then
2. What is the best route to go round the zoo? is it better to do Heart Of Africa at the end of the day when it may be less busy? Should i start by going left at the entrance?
3. Finally, do any of the indoor habitats/houses like Realm Of The Red Ape, Spirit Of The Jaguar And Tropical Realm open late or close early?

Thanks to anyone who helps me with these, as it will help me plan my visit
