Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Does anyone think there needs to be a separate thread for Heart of Africa when it opens this week? I know when islands opened there was a new discussion created to contain all the hundreds of comments and opinions.
That might be a good idea, I feel it would be good to get the opinions of the public. As for me, I honestly can't remember what that area was like before construction so it'll all be new.

Does anyone know what will happen to the old meerkat enclosure since they are moving to a new one in heart of Africa?

The visitor path to it is being closed as far as I know. What will happen to the enclosure itself I'm not sure but I'd guess it's probably going to stay empty.

I presumed they are keeping it and using it for the meerkat experience

Apologies if I’ve missed it, but do we know what’s happening to the old giraffe enclosure when they move over to HoA?

For now the camels have moved in (the onagers are still where they were so they are no longer mixed).

Full species list of hidden savannah on the chester zoo app. Nothing too exciting
This is actually quite exciting for me. I've never seen a spitting cobra before, and I do like pancake tortoises and African bullfrogs, so I imagine I'll get a lot out of this section.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but when is this new area opening, have they given a date yet?

They were certainly mentioned in a lot of recent marketing - so either they're coming later, there's been some problem/delay, they're not actually in Hidden Savannah but somewhere else, or they've simply been left off.

As I noted above, at least one enclosure label has been changed since they started showing labels in the app and the labelled species are hardly exhaustive in the rest of the map (only two of the four species are labelled for Monkey Islands, for instance) so I would be wary of taking any firm conclusions from the app.
The species lists on the app really don’t seem to be comprehensive - what appears to be an Ethiopian mountain adder was shown in a recent promotional video on the zoo’s Instagram page.

I thought Ethiopian mountain adders we’re meant to go to HoA

I'm in a Chester Zoo fan group on Facebook and photos posted today confirm the the Ethiopian Mountain Adder is indeed on show. :)

Also confirmed that the Rock Hyrax are back in their old spot. Not seen any of the foxes yet but one of the porcupines was posted.
