Chester Zoo Chester Zoo discussion and questions 2025

Vulterine guinea fowl have been announced as having joined the collection, which is very welcome given most zoos tend to focus on Helmeted Guineafowl (which granted, is a very striking bird)

We went yesterday after not been since April 2024.

There's now what seems to be a permanent fence in front of the Black Lemur enclosure window.
Anyone know why this would be? We thought it was because people would bang the glass, but their next door neighbors, the black/white Belted Lemurs, didn't have this fencing in front of their window.
There's now only 3 species in the Lemur Walkthrough, the rest has been moved onto the island.

Also 4 Bush Dog pups or around 6-7 weeks old.

And after desperately trying to spot the Okapi youngster back in 2023 and unsuccessful after many visits, I finally got to see the latest edition. It is just a stunning looking animal!

Haven't seen the new bit yet, we thought we'd focus on familiar things first, but we'll be back in 2 weeks for the rest.

What lemurs are still in the walkthrough ?

What lemurs are still in the walkthrough ?
I think it's ring tails, black/white and red ruffed (?) The black and the crowned aren't and they were the reason I would go through the walkthrough so haven't bothered since found out they were no longer in there.
When I asked was told the black are in the enclosure opposite the onager which as @Moorhunhe rightly said is fenced off so can't get in front of the indoor viewing window (has been for some time). I have seen them once in the outside enclosure but can't photograph due to the crossed netting. The crowned were moved on to the island, never been able to see them on there

Yes, as catfan said, the crowned, red bellied and black lemurs all went to the island.
It's a shame. I've never actually really seen any lemurs when trying to look at the island from multiple angles, apart from ring tails sitting on top of their enclosure, and it's so far away too.

So remains in the walkthrough is the ring tails, black/white belted and red ruffed ones.

@catfan the black lemurs accross the onagers have always been there (at least since 2023), it's a couple.
The black ones that were in the walkthrough were 3 males.

I used to see the lemurs being active in the walkthrough pretty regularly but this year I've barely seen them.

As already said a shame that the crowned, red bellied and black Lemurs were moved to the Island
I remember last year one of the volunteers told me they were stressed from the noise from the evening lanterns event such a shame the animals didn’t get priority, apologies if I spoke out of turn

I don't think you spoke out of turn. I agree with you.

I agree too.

There’s so much potential for the zoo to create an amazing Madagascar zone and I really hope this could be something that gets fast tracked in the next few years. There is so much space around the current Madagascar area to expand into. The number of species currently held (both off and on show) but spread across different parts of the zoo is surely unrivalled in the UK ? How many other zoos in Europe even hold such a diverse range of Madagascar species?
Chester does so much in-situ conservation work in Mandagascar so it makes sense they should highlight this in the zoo. I’m sure that planning has already been given to knock down the old gift shop and staff canteen to create something new and exciting and there is so much opportunity to use the existing lemur islands in a more visitor viewing friendly way.

It's a huge shame if that is true. It could be possible they've even found some already since they must've known Iblis was getting on in age, and he's been under vet care for a little while
The zoo have now said they will be getting new lions at some point in the (near?) future. Anyone have any ideas where they will be coming from ?

I was wondering this myself. Especially since its been such a rough year for asiatic lions in Europe. About 5 deaths with only one surviving cub born.

I agree too.

They could also decide to build the komodo house in Islands, as originally planned, the area is still unused, allowing there current house to be used for Madagascar species
