Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion, Speculation & Questions 2018

Cub showing well between 2.30 and 4-ish today (well, except around 3.30 when keepers were doing a scatter feed ;) - but as soon as the den door opened Millie came out, quickly followed by the cub). She really is very cute.

I was there and saw her too!!! She is ridiculously cute. I got some good views of all three Sun Bears both before and after the scatter feed. I'll probably post a few more thoughts on my visit but she was definitely the highlight.

Yes, but only because the Binturong didn't come out ... :D

Just a quick few questions will be visiting in November with a few heel chair users (mind you may be in one myself by then) –

The following bird species have been added to the gallery lately and I would like to know how long they’ve been in the collection and where they are likely to be seen and about what time please?

Scaly breasted bulbul
Fire tailed barbet
Black browed barbet
Fire tufted bulbul
Silver eared mesia
Blue naped mousebird
Scarlet rumped tanager

Does anyone know if there are any more additions to the bird species list please?

Just a quick one here what is the difference between the Javan Rhinoceros Hornbill in Islands and the Rhinoceros Hornbill in Tropical Realm please?

Your list is a little garbled, I've never heard of a fire-tailed barbet. The scaly-breasted bulbul and the black-browed barbet are in the Monsoon Forest (so they can be hard to spot). The fire-tufted barbet and the silver-eared mesias are in the walk-through aviary in Islands, between the tapirs and the sun bears. The mousebirds are in the Congo peafowl aviary in the Tropical House and the tanager (a female) is in long aviary at the end of the upstairs gallery, together with a pair of collared trogons. All these birds arrived this year. The smaller aviary beside the trogons and tanager, which used to hold the Philippine scops owls, now has a pair of Soccoro doves. I think the doves were previously off-show, and the owls are now in outdoor aviary opposite the great grey owls. The only other additions to the birds on-show are a pair of mountain peacock pheasants in one of the new aviaries beside the chimps.

They are the same: I have been told that the pairs were swapped over earlier in the year.

Sorry I was getting a little muddled there's no such bird as a fire tailed barbet as far as I know it was me thinking of 2 species while writing on the computer.
Thank you very much for the information again the zoo as 2 different signs for the same species I'm sure they'll change them soo.

Hello, can you tell me which animals will be in the new madagascar? how will be this habitat ? will it be like the Zurich masoala?

The phase of Madagascar currently under construction consists of three (very!) large netted outdoor netted enclosure - one for Fossa and two for lemurs, one of which will be walk-through. It's officially Phase Two of Madagascar after the play area developments nearby.

You can see the enclosures in the photos below - the height of the viewing shelters and the workmen in some of the shots will give some idea of the scale!

I was attending a wedding in Shoppshire on Saturday. On Sunday morning my wife suggested we get a coffee and that we should go and see the Elephants. So on our journey back to Liverpool we popped into to Chester Zoo for half an hour. A coffe and piece of cake purchased and eaten. Then we spent about an hour watching the Elephants and other animals in the entrance area of the Zoo.

It is quite amazing that you can spend a considerable amount of time in this area without spending a dime. Now i’ve Spent thousands at Chester so I do not feel guilty and take it as a huge previlage that you can see Warthogs, Bkack Rhino, Hornbill, Tree Shrew and more in this area. If we had more time we could spent more time here or gone in to the Zoo proper but our flights back to the Isle of Man made for a short visit.

The Elephant house is a lovely experience and I wish that they would add some inverterbrets and reptiles to have a more complete variety. But hey ho it was still a great visit. The Elephants where all very active and it is amazing to see the herd with so many age ranges within it.

A long browse around the shopped followed by a purchase for our son and we had to leave. Thoroughly enjoyable hour. My wife did mention that she wished they’d do a reduced rate for shorter time. Not sure how that would work but we’d pay a tenner each to go in for an hour (we’d but lifetime tickets if lived closer and the Irish Sea didn’t separate us) but £25 each for an hour was a little too rich. Not sure how or if that could work.

But once again I was really greatful for the experience we had.

Glad you had a good time. The only way that idea would work is late-rates i.e. if you rock up an hour / hour and half before closing.

1 of the giraffes may have been on the move on Monday as there was a large (tall) trailer being driven in & then back out of the enclosure (presumably with a giraffe inside on the way out).
Watching the tractor move into place with the trailer attached & a number of the keepers & the majority of the giraffes all in the enclosure at the same time made interesting viewing for a good while.

That would be Fire Tufted Barbet -- they used to breed these some years ago,

I`m guessing it will be one of the young males, Murchison or Narus perhaps ?

Wouldn`t expect it to be a female with a halt to the Rothschild breeding program

They currently hold 3.6 giraffes, one young male has left the zoo, I don't know which one.

The Giraffe move was Narus (Orla's calf from April 2017). He's gone over to GaiaZoo in the Netherlands.
His arrival was confirmed by GaiaZoo's own social media last week
