Galapagos Giant Tortoise (wasn't the quotation referring to a tortoise?).

Well done, the exact quote referred to the loss of lonesome George earlier in 2012. The quote mostly is:

"In the summer of which we bade farewell to lonesome George the last giant tortoise of his kind on Ecuador's Galápagos Islands, so sad was his loss that president correa addressed the nation and here's hopes the nations athletes can bring some joy again."

Not even sure how I remembered that!

OK, here's one:

A (native) pop star's joint, but it's not hip.

By any chance have you watched the BBC DVD recently then.

Nope, not even that! Although unless I'm mistaken, there are only really those two specifically Ecuadorian species in the zoo anyway, so if it hadn't been me I'm sure someone would have been close behind!

Is it in a particular area or exhibit?

Yes. ;)

Break the clue down - it's in three 'chunks', one of which is a straightforward clue. The other two are wordplay.

Is it a lilac-breasted roller. The Bay City Rollers came from Scotland and a lilac breast isn't a hip joint.

No right answers so far..!

yesterday I was caught on Cuvier's Madagascar Swift but couldn't make it work completely.

But if we're going with the "native" part meaning the UK, my first thought was Shanny - but I couldn't get a pop star named Shan except in a roundabout lose-some-letters way.

So now I'm going with Garganey. It is native to the UK, and it has Gaga at the front and knee at the end.

...is the correct answer and perfect reasoning!
