I thought I would open a thread where people can put images of old Chester Zoo Guide Books with the year they represent, giving everyone the chance to see how the collections as changed over the years.

I will update with 3 guides shortly if this is in the incorrect thread please move thank you

These will be taken down by the owner/moderators for 'copyright' reasons - or moved to a part of the site not accessible to the public; as an image of the Hamerton one was, even though it was not posted by us and made no difference to us one way or the other....

Actually, the photograph in question is once again located within the Hamerton gallery, and has been for some time now - the reason the "zoo guides and maps" subgallery has been deactivated from public access is precisely because (after discussion between the moderators and @Simon Hampel where the benefits to the site of allowing such images were raised by ourselves, and the fact that several of us believed this would fall under "fair use" as far as copyright is concerned) the upload of zoo-guide photographs is now explicitly permitted as long as it takes place within the gallery of the zoo involved and is tagged as such. As such the "zoo guide" gallery is no longer required.

I think this might not have been fully communicated outwards, hence the confusion - but this is what Simon said at the time:

To summarise policy:
  1. books and guides and other photos of material which is zoo-specific should go in the category for that zoo and be tagged
  2. photos of books which are not zoo specific (ie cover multiple zoos or are general in nature) should go in the Books about Zoos & Wildlife - ZooChat category

The upshot of all of this is, this thread is perfectly fine where it is and does not need to be deleted.

Thanks for the clarification TLD.
I am sure the original poster (who was as I understand it, a bit confused) will be grateful.
Personally, I think this is a useful resource.

This is a good start to a guide book thread :eek: (Monty Python meets ZooChat)

Anyhow, a very good Idea AdrianW1963 and I'm sure many of us would like to see some too.

Many thanks folks for making it clear to me and I suspect many others as to what we are able to upload and as to not again many thanks folks.

1960's sometime given the 6d price, before my time. decimalisation in the UK took place circa 1971.

As I think has been mentioned elsewhere, items like these - although described as "guide" on the cover - are more accurately fold-out-maps :) as for a year, I am not entirely sure. Despite being a regular visitor to the collection, I actually own precious few guidebooks from Chester!

If you're a regular you don't need a guidebook, it's about as much use as a guide book to your own house:). However, travel afar and a one off visit to a zoo or other and it becomes useful and somehow feels more collectable and wanted. We are strange creatures :eek:

You say that, but if Chester still produced guidebooks I would most certainly buy them :p not to mention the fact that historical guidebooks will show the collection in a way I never knew it....

Guidebooks before the internet and social media years, I agree are very worthy. These days I’d say take it or leave it as it’s online somewhere, whatever floats your boat to the individual.
I just want to walk around the bloody place again soon.

Hear, hear :p

There's still a few very good guidebooks being published here and there - mostly on the continent, but with several here too - but I agree things are more lacklustre than they once were.

This a map that was in the guide book from above

It would be interesting to know what year the guide is from as Rob say's the map is 1962 but can't find reference to guide book for 1962?

There would not have been a guide book in 1962. I think the folded map was the zoo's only publication, until Chester Zoo News was published periodically as a booklet, but I think that happened a little later. I suspect that the map in the guidebook posted above is later - perhaps around 1980, but @bongorob can probably provide an exact date.

Here we go with a few more from my new collection -
