I think I can see how yesterday's confusion arose. The keepers and the publicity people will have arranged that the announcement about the baby rhino coincided with its first outing in the paddock (at least during opening hours). They kept its birth quiet for a few days to check that everything was OK - which was quite easy as there is no indoor viewing for the Indian rhinos. This is exactly what happened with Asha's first calf.
However nobody could predict that the elephant calf would be born on the same day. Because the Elephant House is the first thing that everybody sees as they enter the zoo (unless they have a inexplicable affection for warthogs) they immediately realise that something has happened when they see the house is closed. The only question is whether the news is good or bad: is there a new calf or is one of the elephants sick? So people ask questions and as soon as someone answers, the word gets around. They can't keep the birth secret, particularly if they follow routine and let the herd into the paddock later in the day (as I mentioned previously).
I guess that they didn't announce the elephant birth until today, to get good publicity stories two days running.

Thi's Calf is Male. Father is Aung Bo.The assumed gestation was 25 months!! Progesterone level dropped 3 months ago and it is believed the fetal resorption process had begun.
I knew Thi was Pregnant, and I was kinda hoping for a Female calf, so Nandita would have a slightly younger full-sister to grow up with, but a heathy calf is the main thing. I hope Sithami and Sundara are pregnant again. I know Aung has been covering recently, so fingers crossed. New Calves make the herd ever more cohesive.

I knew Thi was Pregnant, and I was kinda hoping for a Female calf, so Nandita would have a slightly younger full-sister to grow up with, but a heathy calf is the main thing. I hope Sithami and Sundara are pregnant again. I know Aung has been covering recently, so fingers crossed. New Calves make the herd ever more cohesive.

Well who else was the father going to be ? Pathogenesis in Elephants is hardly common..
The way @gentle lemur wrote it read like it may be / it may not be. Like saying it could be water …, it could equally be air. That leaves everything up in the air.
It is of course an entirely different matter if and when you have witnessed or a friend posted something more substantive. I would prefer if one would wait until the prove came out and then post it here.
Suffice to say now: I am happy there has been a double pachyderm happy event. I wonder who is the new mother of the infant elephant? Out of sheer curiosity: Did any of you regulars know of any elephant pregnancies or was this right out of the blue?
I only mentioned it for people who are not familiar with Chester's Elephants. btw, it's Parthenogenesis.
If lots of Photographs of a newborn Elephant Calf posted by Visitors on Instagram (Location Tagged- Chester Zoo), Facebook, Twitter is not prove, then I don't know what is.
The Mother is Thi. Yes, I knew she was Pregnant

Is there still a species at the zoo inside the paddock what previously held the Pademelons (after it housed the anteaters and before that the kangaroos)?
New map for May has been put on the website includes Pallas cats and tree kangaroos
Seems Chester likes naming it’s male elephants with A names. First Ayuu and now now the newest member of the heard has been named Ajan Hi-Way.

Maybe a new naming system after the bull that fathered them?
I would do stuff like that, just for fun because that's how I roll.
