Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2020

AFAIK, he has no offspring at Chester now. The only female calf born in recent year was Hazina, she was the offspring of Magadi from memory.
That is correct.

It is to be hoped - and surely timely - that a new breeding bull arrives in due course at Chester Zoo to continue to conservation breeding program. It would also enable more individuals to be set aside for in situ reintroduction projects to go forward (either Rwanda, Tanzania (north), Uganda and Kenya - all countries would benefit -). Perhaps even, another bull vice versa from a range state or the out-of-range South-African Eastern black population.

The Rwanda population is an example of admixture of the European EEP captive stock with the 4 founders that set up the South Africa out-of-range group (current numbers should be around 85-110).

Will the old flamingo aviary open on the 24th as well as Monsoon Forest?
I was at the zoo today, so I can report that I don't think so. There are trees planted, including a number of palms, but nothing smaller, and the pools are more or less drained (although the rain was working hard fill them). The Tropical House was closed and there was scaffolding up on the wall to the right of the entrance, in the red river hog enclosure: but as it was my first visit since last December, I'm not sure how new that news is.

Wondering if it will be virtually the same inside or if they have made any actual changes. I'm assuming the former but let me hope that it will be a lot less crowded around the orangs and gharials!!

Yesterday I didn't have time to make sense of everything I saw at the zoo, in the light of the news reported by @Nisha above.
The Monsoon Forest will have to be restocked within the next few days, to give the animals time to settle in before it reopens (apart from the few species that have been kept there during the renovation). The notice at the entrance of the Tropical House said it was closed for repairs, which I am sure was true because of the scaffolding on the walls: but I expect that some of the birds, amphibians and reptiles kept behind the scenes will be moving, and they may need to catch up some of the animals on show too - for example the yellow-headed mynahs which were originally in the Monsoon Forest, might be moving back.
I was a little puzzled by a notice at the bottom of the walkway into RotRA, which said that the house would be closed at 1pm for cleaning but would reopen after about half an hour. I didn't arrive until after it reopened, but I just saw one of Sumatran orangs - it was only a glimpse, but I thought that it was one of the older juveniles. On the other hand I saw all the Borneans, although Leia and her baby only made a brief appearance. The moloch gibbons were in the wired outdoor enclosure next to the entrance. I may be adding 2 plus 2 and getting 5, but I see a possible connection between these facts.
I didn't look in at the Monkey House, so I don't know anything about the macaques, but I assume they will be moving too. As I hope to be at the zoo again today I will keep my eyes open. Watch this space :)

They do clean ROTRA I think they have to because of Covid-19 they also close the Tropical House for around 30 mins during the day for the same thing not sure on all the other indoor areas though

I only get to Chester once a year and going this Thursday so really hope they haven't moved all the animals in by then.

That makes sense, thank you (although I didn't see the same sign today, perhaps I missed it). However I was wrong about the Sumatran orangs in this morning's post: I saw Emma, Subis + baby, 2 juveniles and Puluh's right foot in RotRA, but I think they will be moving soon. I was told that the macaques have been moved already, although there were about 10, mostly subadults, still in the Monkey House.
At 10am there was a large mobile crane parked on the road between the Indian rhino's pool and the spider monkey enclosure (the road had been closed off), there were also a few keepers congregated outside the rhino's house at about 10.45; the crane was gone by the time I left at 3.30pm. I make no further comment, because I don't want to be wrong again ;)
The Tropical House was still closed and more scaffolding was being assembled inside the entrance lobby.
My best sighting of the day was a half-grown bronze-tailed peacock pheasant which ran across the footpath in the walkthrough next to the tapirs in Islands. The hen was nearby.

Don't think this has been noted but the zoo have announced members wont need to book to visit for a period between before the year is out. Seems to suggest that now includes weekends.

Might get to go this year now!
