Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

The capacity for Spirit of the Jaguar is actually 2.2 + offspring, and so they could afford to keeping Napo and importing a companion for him, alongside importing a completely new pair for breeding.

Yes, didn't Chester used to have 2 pairs of jaguars when SOTJ was new, or at least fairly new? I seem to remember them taking an older pair from Marwell when their jaguar enclosure was demolished, and having a younger pair intended for breeding in the other half. I personally love this idea of a 'breeding enclosure' and a 'retirement enclosure'!

Most important of all though, I hope Napo is OK and has many good years ahead of him. He's an absolutely stunning animal.

If my memory serves me right then I think there used to be 5 jaguars held prior to Napo and Goshi.

1:1 Salvador & Sophia
1:0 Pele
1:1 (mother and son) Coro/Coral & Bonita/Bonnetta

Salvador (died in 2011) and Pele (died in 2013) both died at Chester, Coro & Bonita were moved to Amazonia zoo (possibly as this rings a bell).

Sofia was moved to Big Cat Sanctuary in 2016 (unsure if she's still living)

I
remember seeing pele and Sofia together in the rainforest enclosure prior to his death than I think Sofia was moved to the savannah side and then napo goshi moved into the rainforest enclosure because when napo and goshi first arrived they were in the savannah side and pele and Sofia were together as a non breeding pair in the rainforest enclosure

I mean she'd be 20 years old this year so a very good age for a jag

Thanks so much for this fantastic information. The names Pele and Salvador certainly ring a bell! See my above post re: Sofia.

1.0 Pele (melanistic male) was born in 1993. He came to Chester Zoo from Marwell Zoo in 2004 and died in May 2013. He was housed separately from his mate 0.1 Bonita and their son 1.0 Coro (who were housed as a pair).

Prior to that, the intended breeding pair arrived in 2001-2002:

1.0 Salvador (golden male)
Born at Poznan Zoo 06/05/1991
Arrived at Chester Zoo 22/06/2001
Died at Chester Zoo 00/11/2011

0.1 Sofia (golden female)
Born at Rostock Zoo 22/05/2001
Arrived at Chester Zoo 22/09/2002
Transferred to TBCS 00/05/2016

Many thanks for this superb information! I'm fascinated by the history of these animals. Jaguars really are very underrated by zoos I feel, so here's hoping that Chester will continue to keep them for many, many years to come.

Just found out there was another pair - Carlos and Rome:

1.0 Carlos (born 1980, Rome Zoo), arrived from Rome Zoo 12/04/2001
0.1 Ebony (born 1984, Rome Zoo), arrived from Rome Zoo 12/04/2001

Carlos was golden; Ebony was melanistic (obviously)

They both died prior to the Marwell Jaguars arriving.

Also for those who don't know on a channel on YouTube called our world there are some episodes of the old zoo days programme on there
Thanks. Do you know where any Colchester episodes can be found as I have seen the Chester ones on that channel but there doesn't appear to be any from Colchester, on there at least. Does anyone else have any idea?

Virtual Tour

Chester Zoo are holding a virtual tour via their Facebook page to celebrate British Science Week for anyone who’s interested.

Here’s a summary:

Viewers can expect to get close to some of the incredible species that the zoo is home to, including the Eastern black rhinos, Southern cassowaries, Andean bears and Komodo dragons, finishing with a live Q&A with the zoo’s conservation education experts.

We’ll be kicking things off by taking a look at how monitoring hormones in dung helps us to breed critically endangered Eastern black rhinos to prevent their extinction.

Then, we’ll be heading over to meet the Southern cassowaries to see how brand new zoo research has discovered how these huge birds communicate, in ways that can’t be heard by humans!

Next, we’ll be revealing the special monitoring techniques helping the elusive Andean bear in Bolivia, as well giving a little update on the two cubs that are here at the zoo.

Finally, we’ll be shoiwng how thermal imaging cameras help us to better understand Komodo dragons and the tireless work our conservationists are carrying out to protect their future, followed by a live Q&A with our experts.

Just watched the Black rhino live segment from earlier on social media and interestingly Zuri was very intrigued by dung from a "bull rhino who was next door". They're not sure whether they will introduce them but it does make you wonder what bull as the only bulls there (that I'm aware of) are Gabe, Ike( but he's Zuri's son) & Jumanee. The eldest only turned 6yrs old in January this year so I'm presuming it could be Gabe?
