Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

Just watched the Black rhino live segment from earlier on social media and interestingly Zuri was very intrigued by dung from a "bull rhino who was next door". They're not sure whether they will introduce them but it does make you wonder what bull as the only bulls there (that I'm aware of) are Gabe, Ike( but he's Zuri's son) & Jumanee. The eldest only turned 6yrs old in January this year so I'm presuming it could be Gabe?
It has been a long time since the last few births. I do hope they make a move on soon with transfers and breedings!

Or they can maybe bring in some new females and hopefully one of the boys will take a fancy to one of them
You might care to know ATM Chester Zoo does not have an adult breeding bull on site. That is the first hurdle they need to pass. All their cows Kitani (b. 1997), Ema Elsa (b. 2002), Malindi (b. 2005) and Zuri (b. 2007) are in the perfect age range. Young adolescent, if juvenile bulls like Gabe (b. 2016) or Ike (b. 2017) and Jumaane (b. 2018) are hardly playthings for the adult cows.

So, first and foremost they require a new adult bull black rhino for breeding to breed with their current run of cows. It is way too early to even talk of new young rhino cows ...., TBH.

Not bad numbers considering the zoo didn't open until April in 2021 and the reduction of overseas visitors

It’s nice to see Chester Zoo visitor numbers starting to recover after the pandemic. For interest’s sake, here’s their visitor numbers over the last decade:

Chester Zoo Visitor Numbers (2011-2021)

2011: 1.2 million
2012: 1.4 million
2013: 1.4 million
2014: 1.4 million
2015: 1.7 million
2016: 1.9 million
2017: 1.9 million
2018: 2.0 million
2019: 2.1 million
2020: 1.2 million
2021: 1.6 million

*Numbers rounded to 0.1

Incredible news for such a rare species even rare at Chester because I rarely see them does anyone have a list for the amount of times they bred

Same here what's the group size because normally when I see them they're in the sheltered bit near the house can you still view them without going on the bridge because I remember viewing them from where the one horned rhinos are

I have no records after 2018

# indicates young did not survie for 30 days.

I think that the fawn announced by the zoo is the one born earlier this year. They are very slow in the press office sometimes, which is ironic as the reason they stopped printing arrivals and births in the zoo magazine was because th information would be out of date.

What exhibit would be suitable for tamanuda in the zoo and with the peafowl it's a good place to put them because it would be like their natural habitat
