Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

Chester Zoo closed tomorrow (Friday) due to the coming storms, this is from members' email:

It's due to be a bit wild and windy out there tomorrow! The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning with 70mph winds, so we're expecting Storm Eunice to leave a little trail of destruction across the zoo. With the risk of trees and other debris blocking pathways right across our 128 acre zoo, we’re sorry to say we’re going to have to keep our gates closed tomorrow.

Don’t worry, the animals will be tucked up cosy and warm under the watchful eye of our amazing zookeepers.

Thankfully, it’s forecast to be much calmer from the weekend onwards and so we hope to be open again from Saturday morning (please check our website and social media channels for updates and confirmation).

We are so, so sorry for postponing any plans you had to visit tomorrow but, as we really hope you’ll understand, we simply have to put the safety of our visitors first.

Stay safe and warm and we look forward to welcoming you to the zoo soon.

I would guess that all zoo collections are staying shut tomorrow due to the high winds. I have read on most zoo Facebook pages that they have confirmed to stay shut.

Thanks for the advice GaryA, but I'd seen the weather forecast, nd Saturday was a terrible day. Also I would have gone by train, and Stoke to Crewe line was closed for around six hours on Saturday.

I'll get there again soon.

Yeah, I think the continued bad weather has been a bit surprising and a pain in the bum!

Enjoy when you do get your trip in!

It was still very chilly and blowy this morning, nearly a week later. Totally pants weather!

Apparently there's 5 Okapi, so apart from mum, dad and little Kora who are the other 2?

For those who don't know today is riva the elephant's second birthday today I will never forget that moment when I saw her at only 24 hours old

Sisters, Indali and Riva, have given fans of Chester’s herd something positive to focus on during difficult times.

Riva’s birth in 2020 brought comfort to those mourning the death of matriarch, Thi, the same year.

Indali gives hope EEHV can be detected early and successfully treated as it was with her in 2019 - the first calf at Chester Zoo to survive the virus.

I saw Jubilee (Asian elephant) at four days old in 1977, and by co-incidence I saw Motty (African x Asian elephant) at four days old in 1978. I saw another elephant calf at a day old some years ago.
