Chester Zoo okapi birth will help reveal secrets of species, keeper says

The "incredibly special" birth of an okapi will help to reveal "one of the least known and understood species on the planet", a keeper has said.

Okapis are only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where about 10,000 remain in the wild.

Chester Zoo said Arabi, a six-week-old female, had been named after a village in DRC's Okapi Wildlife Reserve.

Okapi keeper Hannah Owens said it would be "a real privilege" to watch the "energetic" female calf grow.

Presumably inka
Will be great News if it is Inka. Lovely young Female Black Jaguar - Daughter of Kiera (Kumal x Kedera) bred at Paradise Wildlife park in 2017. And father was Neron (formerly from Amsterdam Zoo).
Question is will we also be expecting a new breeding Male?

I would assume so, they said they won't pair up Napo with another Jaguar, Bernie, the Andean Bear has also just moved out of the Savannah side of Spirit of the Jaguar, which makes room for a new breeding pair of Jaguars, Inka + ...

Does leave the question of where the bush dogs will move to, their old enclosure is still occupied by the cheetah and I believe there is babirusa in the enclosure opposite? Either way, getting jaguars in both sides of SOTJ again is really exciting, hopefully we could see cubs in a few years. :)

A pademelon has now moved back into the old serval enclosure that most recently held babirusa

Wonder if they'll alternate the species. By that I mean, bush dogs inside vs jaguars outside. Then, bush dogs outside, jaguars in.
Might be an issue with scent marking but revolving enclosures aren't unheard of.

Also, has Bernie left the collection then or just moved back to the Andean Bear exhibit?
I've just seen (what I'm assuming are) recent photos of him posted online, so I'd guess moved back. I'd be surprised if he had left given the breeding record

Agreed seeing as they can only be viewed from one spot personally I feel the pudu should move in with the capybara and anteater because it would make viewing a lot easier , they would have plenty of space and bliss the anteater has been mixed with pudu in the past and the capybara probably wouldn't care about the pudu living along side them

You would never see then in those large areas, they would either stay in the house or hide at the back
