I had a nice day out at Chester zoo on Saturday. One of the highlights was seeing the Javan Green Magpie for one of the first times ever outside the tropical realm.
Inside dragons in danger one of the enclosures opposite the Komodo Dragon enclosure as soon as you walk in is under renovation, I expect this is where the baby dragons will live.
Seeing the chimpanzees was another highlight, although I get to see them at my local zoo it’s always nice seeing a different troop. And seeing the baby’s was amazing, at Twycross zoo we haven’t had one of them for ages! So it was a nice little surprise to see one since they were all hiding in the foliage at the back. There was a man in his late 30’s with what I believe was a banana and an apple and he was mocking a chimpanzee and trying to trick the chimpanzee thinking that they would be getting the fruit. I was going to say something to that man but thankfully a keeper came and did it for me. Some people are unbelievable.
Monsoon forest was nice but the indoor area for the orangs was extremely crowded with me being pushed by a lady wanting to get a photo of the orangs and using her baby in her stroller and a “batting ram” to get people to move. As a massive bird and primate fan monsoon forest is always a must see.
The outdoor walkthroughs in islands was nice to sit down in and enjoy the birds, unfortunately I had screaming kids down my ear who were bored because they wanted to see the orangs but other then that they were lovely. The Latin American walkthrough aviary is amazing, looking at it from the outside doesn’t show the beauty of the actual inside of it. It makes you feel like you’re actual in Latin America.
Tropical realm was amazing! I always like to sit down for a few minutes and just relax watching the birds. The hornbill collection is stunning and to see a bunch of Trogons inside the tropical realm (one aviary near the wrinkled hornbill hornbills) who shared it with Socorro doves and outside in an aviary with Brazilian tanagers and Red-Billed Curassow.
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but there is now a helmeted curassow inside tropical realm next to the rhinoceros hornbill aviary.
Other then the cons I had a great day out and I’m excited to go back for another visit (maybe when it’s not so busy haha).

This is where they have been kept in the past so that is probable.
Chester's orang enclosures are fantastic but this is certainly a problem, in Monsoon Forest it used to be WORSE before the fire.
This is a relatively new addition, they came from the now closed Harewood Bird Garden.

Did they enlarge the public indoor viewing area since the fire? The main area was ridiculously small beforehand for such a large enclosure and crowds of people trying to squeeze into the small area. Yet the nearby Sulawesi Macaque enclosure has a huge indoor viewing woindow hardly anybody stops at.
Moreso they changed the layout of the smaller exhibits so there's a bit more room to walk around.
Chester Zoo is breeding the scarce yellow sally, a river fly (Conservation: Lifeline for endangered insect feared extinct). There are plans to release some into clean rivers.
I was at Chester today and neither house was closed, I did however only see a single sumatran, I'm guessing at Bornean because none were visible, but could be either tbf.
The picture on socials looks very dark which makes me think it's Bornean
