Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

I hope so. The people doing the talk did not seem to know much about the animal side of things. Not surprising really when the are not animal people.

I suspect that with a massive public aquarium (not to mention three excellent aquarium shops, which far too many people treat as free zoos) just down the road it's not so much a matter of the Zoo not being able to afford new aquaria as of its not being able to make a business case for them.

It was on the zoo website.
I also expected an email about the meeting. It seems the zoo needs to improve their communication with members.
Absolutely! It seems bonkers to go to the trouble of streaming the event without announcing it beforehand

Interesting the mention of no plans for gorillas, I was under the impression they’d be included in the African forest plans

Gorillas have been off the plans for a while now, since a change in the zoo management and changes to the masterplan.

Was there any mention of the small indoor exhibit that was on the plans? There has been physical marketing in the zoo advertising the Cobras, Naked Mole-Rats and Dung Beetles. Believe the original plans had locusts, pit vipers and geckos too.

Yes there was. Unfortunately the sound was not at all good at that time, so I missed it.

I just overheard one of the Rangers doing a chimp talk when I was passing.
No problem @bongorob; I'm really grateful for the response anyway! Dylan has been alpha for quite a while, (I believe he took the position from Boris around twenty years ago), so I was wondering how the group would react to the power struggle and threat/ change to the "status quo" that has existed for a substantial chunk of their collective lives.

Visited Chester today.

Giraffe House was closed, presumably beacuse they have a baby.

Butterfiles was closed.

Oakfield Lawn, Rockery and Roman Garden area was closed. Looks like a Snow Leopard (or two) is/are at Chester.

The owls and Asian birds in the old owl aviaires all have new labels.

Finally saw an Asian Giant Toad, and I forgot to put my camera battery in after charging it last night, so no photograph; I'll probably never see one again.

Not all too knowledgeable on Chester's upcoming plans, but might I ask what the later phases of Grasslands entail, where in the zoo they will be built, and what will replace the zoo's current giraffe enclosure when they move to the savannah?

Sorry I missed an earlier post what’s happening with the chimps?

Dylan is being challenged by Carlos and Eric for control of the group. I overheard a presenter's talk as I passed by, so I have no furthur information.
Both Carlos and Eric are entering their 20's now so they're at a stage where it's really now or never. Usually you'd see males begin challenging a little bit earlier, but obviously now that these two are in their primes they'd be a far more difficult force to reckon with. In saying that, female support is crucial and neither have their mothers still with them, which would theoretically make it harder for them.
