That is another sad reminder .... that management of a species is not always top notch (and what may be conservation-wise less relevant yesterday .... may be very much endangered into the future. Welcome, bushmeat, clearfelling Africa's rainforests in favour of plantations, Eucalyptus and palm oil (especially West Africa ...).Western Sitatunga have not bred at Chester since the birth of six females in 2016.
You may have been with me when I took this photo.I don't remember that James, but I expect we did see her.
wasnt it on SLOTZ?I don't remember that James, but I expect we did see her.
the giraffe barn & paddock is complete, however the whole project is still being worked on into the new year.Does this mean the large grasslands area is complete?
No, just one large paddock, so you should be able to see them from the islands entrance pathOh, I assume this means there’s a seperate paddock to the large mixed one with the zebras etc
The paddock is split into sections by some ‘hidden’ fences and large tree branches and rocks. Initially the giraffe, zebra, roan, blesbok and ostrich will be kept in separate sections or rotated so they will not have access to the same area. Over time they will slowly be introduced to eachother. This is the main reason the giraffe have moved so soon so they can acclimatise to their paddock first before the introductions. The timing of the moves also has to take into consideration any pregnancies within the current species. They can’t move the animals too close to (before or after) any births. The moves have been timed just right so that all animals are settled in time for Easter next year. It’s estimated it will take a few months before all species will be fully introduced. There is a video about the move on the most recent members update. No, just one large paddock, so you should be able to see them from the islands entrance path
Cheers Bongorob, I saw all amphibians apart from the Mao-Son Frogs and Mountain Chickens yesterday, the Asian Giant Toad was visible in Dragons in Danger. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Mao-Son Frogs are gone from the collection as I saw a keeper looking for them last visit with no luck.I have not seen the Mao Son Frogs for years. Chester does not seem to have many amphibian exhibits where the inhabitants can be easily seen. I've only seen the Tree Toads and Asian Giant Toads once, and on neither occasion was I able to get any photos.
Vipers are found over a large range including north of the Arctic circle, I doubt that British autum weather bothers them. It is always nice to see them though.
I can also echo these thoughts, IIRC I last saw a mountain chicken at Chester in 2013.The mountain chickens are pretty hit or miss in my experience, you can be looking for a while and still not see them. Compared to other ZooChatters I seem to have had better luck as I've heard quite a few have never seen them.

Good visit to Chester today, finally managed to spot the Philippine Mouse Deer amongst other things. A couple of things to note:
• There was a Leach’s Anole (Anolis leachii) in one of the Dyeing Poison Frog enclosures.
• There was a Western Girdled Lizard (Zonosaurus lauticadus) in the smallest of the Parson’s Chameleon enclosures.
• 9th visit this year looking for Mao-Son Frogs and have yet to see them. Has anyone had any luck recently?
• Northern Adder (Vipera berus) still active despite the cold weather.
• Young Komodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) seems to be starting to gain its adult colouration.
In the tropical realm past the radiated tortoises. There used to be two emerald tree boas in the enclosures, but now the one on the left hand side houses the anole. Look up high for it!My mind has slipped. Could you remind me where the Dyeing Poison Darf Frog viv is please? I’m yet to see the anole in the butterfly house so this one would make up for it.
