Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2024

Chester has 1.0 Palawan Binturong as far as I know.

Talking of moving have the Burmese brow antlered deer moved into the old Phillipine spotted deer enclosure?

I think they have, I walked along Flag Lane to the zoo a few weeks ago and deer were in that exhibit. I couldn't see them properly through the trees, and once inside the zoo I went to look for them twice and they were not out. So I couldn't identify them but I expect I saw Brow-antlered deer.

It’s on the Whipsnade thread that keepers have been telling guests that mother & daughter duo, Karishma and Elizabeth will be moving to Chester in the New Year to boost numbers to Chester’s elephant herd. They are already living separately from the rest of the Whipsnade herd. Hopefully we will get some sort of announcement / confirmation from Chester soon?

It's likely we'll only get an announcement from Chester once they arrive tbh.

However extremely exciting news if true for Chester and the future of their breeding program. Whilst Karishma is non breeding (due to still carrying a fetus from a previous pregnancy), she'll hopefully provide Indali especially with the guidance and leadership she'd need at this age where she's beginning to enter adulthood. Karishma's daughter, Elizabeth is also the same age as Indali so hopefully those two will form a bond that could be very beneficial long term.

On the elephants, I have been wondering what's going on with Anjan. Wasn't he meant to be transferred out this year?

Not that it matters but nice to know that Indali is distantly related to the incoming female elephants(Karishma had the same father as Indali's grandmother Sithami).

Hopefully they will be able to bond and as previously pointed out create the stability needed for Indali to breed successfully.

I don’t know for sure, but I imagine they would have delayed Anjan leaving slightly after the passing of Riva and Sundara and the transfer of Aung Bo. For Indali and Maya to loose 4 members of the herd in such a small period of time I imagine they would find it extremely distressing. I’d imagine he will be leaving before Karishma and Elizabeth arrive though.

Visited the zoo today. Work has started on the old giraffe paddock. A section has been partitioned off and connected to the rear of the giraffe house whilst the remainder has had new railings installed around the perimeter. It looks like they are preparing to transfer 'new' animals in or just transferring in the bactrian camels.

So what's the plan for the old Bactrian Camel exhibit?

They've bred the species three times, only the first didn't survive. The 2nd to be produced was still present on my visit in October - they should now have 4 individuals total.

The pair at the zoo have bred consecutively each year since their arrival in 2021:
-2022 (D.N.S)
-2023
-2024
