Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

The regulations say that the shared cow and bull outdoor space must be at least 20,000 square meters for 5 or less animals and must increase by 2500 square meters for each additional animal over 2 years old.

Anyone know the current size of Chesters space?

ZooLex Exhibit - Elephants of the Asian Forest
This is from 2007 and says the main paddock is 5,900 sqm with total accessible outdoor space at nearly 6,700. The indoor space easily meets the new regulations and think it is certainly up to par at the moment.
As I said in the welfare reforms thread I think almost all UK elephant holders will have to increase their outdoor space in the next 15 years to meet the new regulations (Noah's Ark may be the only facility this doesn't apply for).

So it appears the current complex is about 1.7 acres, which isn't small by any means, but certainly deserving of an expansion soon (especially with these new regulations now in place).

Considering the goal would be to get Chester's herd up to fifteen or so individuals, a complex of at least 10 acres (five times the current complex), would be desired. Considering the space they have available, I could even see them utilising more than that. Perhaps the entire 20 acres will be used for entirely new facilities for the matriarchal herd and bull/s.

Chester are now down to 1,0 Asian lion - the female, Kiburi died on Thursday.
Sad news but not unexpected. She was over 18 years old so not a bad age to have reached.

I wonder where a new breeding group will be coming from (in due course). I expect London’s 2 female cubs would be ready to move on from mum in the coming year or so, so they may be a possibility.

London zoo has two male cubs and one female cub but they could move mum and the female cub as that natural for asiatic lion

To be honest, given the general downwards direction of the Asiatic Lion population in European collections - and lack of any new blood coming in - I wouldn't be all that surprised if the exhibit were to be repurposed for a different species entirely.

Coquerel’s sifaka birth:
Rare baby sifaka | Chester Zoo

The tiny baby has arrived to parents Beatrice (12) and Elliot (12), bringing an end to a five-month pregnancy.

We're the only zoo in the UK, and one of just three in Europe, to care for Coquerel’s sifakas, having worked with the Duke Lemur Centre in America to establish a conservation breeding programme across the continent that’s working to prevent the rare primates from becoming extinct. Currently just nine sifaka reside in the whole of Europe, with four now found in Chester.
The youngest Coquerel's Sifaka is another girl, she has been called SYDONIE
Chester Zoo on Instagram: "It’s a GIRL! Beatrice’s new baby has a name… everyone, meet Sydonie As the only Coquerel’s sifaka family living in the UK, she’s a very special addition to this critically endangered species. #chesterzoo #criticallyendangered #endangeredspecies #conservation #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #primates"

Not exactly. Chester had the only male in Europe not too long ago. I think a couple more may have arrived since from US, but the number of females outweigh males in Europe after the two Chester births. Still good news for the EEP that the Chester pair are breeding successfully.

Ooops I got it wrong. Thankks for the correction.
