Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

Are you sure it was a volunteer as they don't normally have a location by the elephants. Also, the ones I've spoken to have clothing clearly marked as volunteer. As an aside they will be changing their uniform (colour change) soon as part of the new branding.

He was by the lion.

That's very sad to think, both Dartmoor and Chester Zoo have lost their remaining cheetah this year. I really hope Chester will acquire some more soon, why were they moved out of the original enclosure anyway?

from a members email where they announced the death: "Though his[Singa‘s] passing marks a pause in our care of northern cheetahs, we remain committed to the global conservation breeding programme and hope to welcome cheetahs back to the zoo in the future.“

How are these Foxes escaping?
They’re jumping out over the fence. Was speaking to a keeper last time I was at the zoo and she confirmed they didn’t build the fence line high enough so they keep jumping out. Even since they added extra height there has been an escape (presumably over the glass viewing window which is the only area that hasn’t been heightened).

There have also had to be adjustments to the porcupine barriers with new electric fencing installed as they are better climbers than anyone realised.

Chester has replaced Golden-headed Lion Tamarins with Golden Lion Tamarins, a species first bred in the UK at Shavington Zoo in 1930.

Er, slightly more complicated than that but I'd need to check my records to confirm.

Now checked! Unclear whether they were born at Shavington or at Willie English's home in Haslington. My records (taken from the ledger kept by English) shows 2 born dead 23 Apr 1931, 1 alive 11 Sep 1931, 2 alive 29 Mar 1932. I've no earlier record of births.

FURTHER EDIT: The first live birth above was at Haslington. "At the Haslington residence of Dr W L English, Chairman of the Oakfield Zoological Garden, Crewe [i.e. the Shavington Zoo] a lion marmoset has given birth to a baby. Although there is a substantial number of lion marmosets in captivity they rarely breed in so unfavourable a climate" (Crewe Chronicle 26 September 1931).

It used to be possible to see them in the penguin nursery until the zoo boarded up the windows.

I’m pretty sure a keeper told me that they don’t use the nursery anymore because the penguins raise their own chicks now so they stay in the main exhibit. The nursery was used when the chicks were incubated and hand reared.

I expect you are correct. Thank you.
