Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

Also, confirmed by pictures on a Chester zoo fan page on Facebook, the two female elephants, Karishma and Elizabeth have now arrived from Whipsnade zoo!
Great that both females have arrived safely and have already ventured out on display!

Fingers crossed for successful introductions to all three of Chester's elephants over the coming months.

A great day at Chester today with me noting the following:
  • Karishma & Elizabeth (Asian Elephants) were both seen with them utilising the indoor bull area. They didn't have access to the main paddock nor the bull pen during our visit but that isn't to say they don't get evening/night access.
  • There were lots of bird species with young in Monsoon Forest notably being Roul-roul & Pink-necked Green Pigeons with two chicks each.
  • A pair of White-faced Whistling Ducks in the Greater Flamingo aviary had 14 ducklings and the Red Shovelers in the American Flamingo aviary had 3.
  • No sign of the recent okapi youngster, though it was my first time seeing the Red forest Duikers, so they made up for it.
  • I hadn't yet seen Heart of Africa and I was very impressed. It'll be nice when the trees and general planting becomes more established as it still looking very new.

Was informed today that a Snow Leopard cub was born 3 weeks ago, not been an official announcement though
Brilliant news for Chester! Great to have a cub already following their arrival just last year.

It's also impressive to welcome a young cub in the very first breeding season for this new pair. Nubra is just three years old - so she's certainly conceived quite quickly.

The zoo have just announced that they have there first snow leopard cub

Chester Zoo News Release on Snow Leopard Birth:

A first for Chester Zoo: a snow leopard cub is born at the zoo

The cub arrived on Tuesday 10 June 2025 to first-time parents Nubra (3) and Yashin (3).

Now six weeks old, the cub is growing in strength and confidence, and could take those first steps outside at any moment.

This is the first snow leopard cub to be born at Chester Zoo. It’s a truly historic moment and a real cause for celebration – not just for our teams here but also for the future of this magnificent species globally,” said Dr Nick Davis, Mammals General Manager.

An Andean Bear has transferred out to Drayton Manor recently.

Is this Bernie? He was going to Berlin, but I don't recall confirmation that he ever ended up leaving.

However, if he did, that would likely mean this would be his former mate, Lima.

Potentially Lima, she hasn’t been seen by the public recently.

Had a really great visit today, a few things I noticed:
  • Both juvenile komodo dragons are now on display, with one being opposite the indoor Sulawesi crested macaque exhibit in Monsoon Forest.
  • Rio cauca caecilians (Typhlonectes natans) have gone on exhibit in an aquarium just before the aye-ayes in Tropical Realm.
  • Staff were telling guests lining up at the snow leopard exhibit that the door is open and the new cub could go on display any day now.

so they do not have anymore bears?

They still have two Andean bears, the ‘new’ male Oberyn and another female whose name currently escapes me. This should free up some space in the zoo and hopefully allow them to breed the species again.
They do - twelve year old Oberyn, who came from Port Lympne and five year old Pacha (who's the daughter of both Bernie and Lima).

Female Andean Bears usually reach sexual maturity around the ages of five to six, so this would be the perfect time to start pairing up Obe and Pacha and hoping for some success.
