Chester Zoo Chester Zoo news 2025

I suspected this would happen with Karishma. Longleat for Maya perhaps, considering Anne’s health plateaued a few years ago. Purely speculative

Surprised to hear about Maya, would be sad to see her leave. I trust the zoo are doing what's best for the herd.

Does Longleat have facilities for multiple elephants? I'm unfamiliar with their setup but I know Anne was originally brought in on her own.

What's the current set-up with the Elephants then, are Karishma and Elizabeth currently with any of the others?

I was at the zoo the other day and Maya, Indali and Anjan are still being kept apart from Karishma and Beth. I suspect they will try and introduce Indali to Karishma and Beth before Maya and Anjan leave.

A volunteer has made a comment stating both Anjan AND Maya are currently being crate trained and both elephants will be leaving Chester, which will leave Indali, Karishma and Elizabeth. Seems an awful shame to be rehoming Maya if the comments are true as she has been at the zoo for decades now. I suspect she may be clashing with Karishma?

I am a volunteer - and all I can say is that this is a surprise to me.

Anne's enclosure theoretically has space and facilities for 3 elephants, but I'd be surprised that they decided to mix Anne with another elephant at this point (admittedly another pensioner)

When I visited Whipsnade before Karishma and Beth's move, I spoke to their keeper and she mentioned that Anjan and Maya would be moved along. I understand Maya and Karishma are both quite dominant and so to me, the move makes sense, since the two cows would clash.

The keeper also mentioned that they planned to breed Beth first, given she had the support of her mother, and Indali later.

I would think there would be the facilities to keep them seperate if they had to, I’m unaware of how the house is set up, Anne is an extremely old elephant, like maya, so I’m not sure but I don’t know where else she would go as I doubt she’d be moved out of the Uk

I had a feeling this would happen… in my opinion it’s extremely sad, Indali and Maya formed such a wonderful bond after Sundara and Riva died, Maya became a motherly figure to her. I doubt Anjan and Maya will relocate to the same location either.

I did wonder at the time when Whipsnade explained the reasons for their move, whether the problem would simply arise again at Chester and it seems that it has unfortunately.

Do we have any info on the newly acquired lion’s? Just seen the new arrival post put up on Facebook and instagram and I’m intrigued to know more

I really hope the volunteer that said it is wrong, however they did definitely say both Anjan AND Maya. I suppose time will tell… It’s true that both Maya and Karishma are dominant cows though so maybe it’s inevitable sadly.

Details of new lions:

The pair are two years old and named Nilay (male) and Shanti (female):

Rare lions make 'instant connection' as they arrive at Chester Zoo

The pair, a male named Nilay, who has travelled from Köln Zoo in Germany, and a female named Shanti, from London Zoo, have been carefully matched following detailed genetic analysis as part of an international conservation breeding programme.

We went 2 days ago and the Lion enclosure still had fencing in front of the windows. They cleaned the window on the left, but where you can see them inside still had white paint on it.
