Chester Zoo Chester Zoo rebranding

I like the rebrand. Hopefully the end of the trend of zoo branding looking like a school project.

I thought the logo was supposed to be a buffalo horn.

I think that combined with recent news regarding a certain Northern zoo once again having significant husbandry problems and giving ammunition to the anti-zoo crowd Chester probably thought it logical to change name too
I don’t think Chester’s rebranding will be linked to South Lakes’ struggles in any way at all.

I disagree, perhaps not the more recent events but there have been several instances involving South Lakes in the past decade that have further stoked the anti-zoo press in this country. Even recently their social media pages were full of comments from people parroting headlines.

I'm just repeating what I'd been told in early 2023 by a keeper at Whipsnade regardless, obviously ZSL and Chester are separate entities but one can imagine there's a certain amount of crossover in thinking.

What a relief that infantile look has gone. We had to endure it for far too long.

Things are looking far more professional already.

Certainly now when look at both zoo’s respective websites. The layout and design is incredibly similar! Did they employ the same company for their rebrands?

I think if they put a little dot where the rhino's eye was supposed to be, it'd be better

Besides that, this is a marked improvement

On the font showcase gif/video where it's going through different species the zoo has, why is Quokka on there? Following the import to EU last year, might they be going the same direction or did the designers look for one random species to add? Chances are low but one can hope :p

The new design is also growing on me a bit, excited to see the new map look the most

Chester has actively distanced itself from Australian species, on the grounds that Australian conservation is quite well developed enough to look after its own threatened animals - so Quokka would a major change of direction and policy.

It is about fonts, so was likely only chosen to represent the letter Q, not implying in any way it is a species the zoo has. But rather for lack of other animals with a Q...

A little bit of digging, it was done by how and how designChester Zoo Rebrand, Web Design & Web Build if you click on the read more close to the top it gives there mission brief ect and yes it’s supposed to be a rhino and they have worked on this for two years so yes it expensive
Expensive and two years! Wow!
Neat and simple, yes - and an improvement on what went before, certainly in my opinion.
But, an hour or two to pick through some fonts and a couple of days to draw a 'C' with a spike inside, ought to have done it.
Lots of money swilling about to find a home for though, I suppose.

When described as concisely as that, it all rather sounds like a task worthy of appearing on The Apprentice! Wonder what Lord Sugar would make of the result?:p

Just saw this - a bit uninspired, I thought...?
Is the 'C' meant to be a rhino?
The new logo is a custom "C" and within it is a hidden counter form, inspired by a Rhino horn. The reason for this, is that it recalls the zoo history of supporting critically endangered Eastern Black Rhino. It's efforts date back to 1999 with the breeding of a rare calf.

The fact is that for branding to be done properly, with consistent implementation, for an organisation with the scale and reach of Chester Zoo, things need to be done professionally and they should in no way be apologetic for that.

OK - still humdrum though, and all a bit lowest common denominator; professional or not.
