Well Thank you for posting a civil sensible reply, others please note!. I appreciate that. It is not so much a problem but perhaps these whole carcass feeds could be upsetting to certain visitors, and also there will be those who do not regard this only as a natural way of feeding the animal, which I know it is, but people of a warped mind who will enjoy watching this for the wrong reasons, don't London feed their reptiles with whole animals, rabbits, rats etc. when the public are not present?, this used to be the case I have been lead to believe.

Chester did think long and hard about this kind of feeding and considered both the welfare of the animal, the educational value of a more natural style feed and the impact on those people that might find this kind of natural behaviour upsetting. In the end they chose to allow the public to see the natural feeding behaviour of the animal as it's benefits outweigh the problems. The reason one of the zoo rangers is present when the feed takes place is not only to help educate the visitors in what is going on but also why the zoo do it and what effect it would have on the animal if they didn't feed it in this manner.
From my conversations with the rangers the feedback had been significantly positive, combining the educational aspects of the feed with the amazement at seeing an large and fairly unique lizard such as the Komodo being so animated - they tended to get much more criticism previously from people who complained that the komodos never moved and just sat under their heat lamp all day!!

in answer to a previous question too, all of Chesters meat for the carnivores is sourced from local producers including the venison. Remember that a carnivore can only eat meat that has NOT been killed by lethal injection otherwise you run the risk of poisoning your zoo carnivores with barbiturates. That in itself makes sourcing difficult.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions and provide more information - it is not however intended to change your personal views they are as always entirely your own.

From where was this deer carcass sourced, ex zoo stock or elsewhere?. Could it not have been possible to feed it to the animal concerned when the zoo was closed and there were no visitors about?

The deer are not sourced from the zoo.

It would have been possible to do the feed after hours, but that defeats the object since the public would not see it. I found it fascinating to watch the monitors exhibit natural behaviour during the feeding process.

Sorry I don't think it is right OK some children might think it is wonderful but not all children are the same, I personally know it goes on but wouldn't like to see it. I could upset a lot of children, like I say I know it is only natural.

Well re-read my posts. I have three little girls who would not be bothered about this after seeing it hundreds of times on the TV.

Also in this day and age of violence in the soaps, some absolutely vile computer games and some of the most violent films of all time then you'd have to pretty naive to think that most kids would be bothered about an animal eating a carcass! :)

That's fine and your opinion and you are not only entitled not to see it you are also entitled to make sure your children don't watch it - it's not compulsory and you are not trapped and forced to watch you can walk away at any time.

I on the other hand really agree with it, I think it's fine for children to see this and yes not everyone is the same and some will find it as upsetting as another finds it fascinating - the zoo like any establishment has to make a decision on that and inform people as necessary - which they do.
In reviewing the feedback I'm sure if they are receiving totally unfavourable reactions from the public then they would change what they do as any place should do that values public opinion.

True perhaps it is just me then after all I do live in cloud cuckoo land sorry it is just me then I do apologise for butting in.

I find it mildly amusing that the some people think it's wrong to watch an animal exhibit natural behaviour infront of children yet they wouldn't bat an eyelid at kids playing violent video games such as call of duty or GTA!

Edit - just noticed Brum posted this!

Ah I thought we were having a good discussion - don't get huffy!

you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and feelings - there will be adults that are more squeamish than the kids from what I see but at the end of the day if you don't want to see it and you don't want your kids to see it then that's your perogative.

We just don't agree on this point - I don't think you're an idiot because of it and I don't think you were butting in mearly sharing an opinion I was happy to have a discussion on - if it decends into a pointless name calling slanging match then you won't find me contributing any further but whilst it remains adult and valid then I will - but I honestly think we just have to agree to differ in this case - I like it and agree with it - you don't - end of story really!

Sorry I shouldn't have butted in as I have not got any children so excuse me for any inconvenience I have caused

Haha, where was it even insinuated you was 'butting in' because you don't have kids?!

It's laughable that you even brought that up. Thanks for livening up an otherwise boring Monday afternoon though!

It is my pleasure at least I made you smile.

I find it strange that some posts are excluded by admin. It also looks like there is a bully tactic by some members if other members do not agree with certain views.

I think it is just the admins attempting to keep threads on topic and to limit the inanity of certain members.

That is not true, the mods do an excellent job on this forum.

It is time we got back on topic I think.

Well done Chester zoo on feeding the Komodo's while the public are about more collections should do it.

All the do gooder's keep saying animals can't have a real life in captivity but when collections try to make it more realistic who are the first to moan (get a life)!

Again well done Chester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It seems to me that people who hold issue with food chains, their various ways of nutrient uptake, predation and the like are so far removed from nature that it's a marvel they're regular zoo visitors, let alone members of this website.

If you don't view it scientifically, and furthermore instill such in your children what is the point?

At the end of the day zoological parks are representative of a natural world and carnivores naturally eat animals.

I think the bullying you speak of is.... common sense?

On a completely separate note, has Aung Bo covered any of the cows?? At least Sundara, Since arriving?

Does anyone know of specific measures the zoo is taking to ensure Bala and Hari survive should EEHV1 make yet another appearance in Chester?

1.1 green araçari Pteroglossus viridis are onshow on the upper level of the Tropical House.

The Luzon scops owl Otus longicornis is on show in the end aviary (upper level) but is very difficult to spot.
