OK, I just found this thread and am still stuck back on the deep friend Mars bar and coffee thing. This was so much fun, why did you all have to move it back on topic and start talking about animals?

I apologise to AD and everyone else for mentioning the dfMb on page 1. Mea culpa :o
Personally I can't wait to see and photograph the Alaotra gentle lemur baby and the Philippine chevrotain - did you know that this species is only found on three islands - Balabac, Ramos and Bugsuc?*

What is completely incomprehensible to me is that European restaurants - and I am considering the UK part of Europe - do not serve iced tea!!!

Actually one can get iced tea in most restaurants here, as there are a number of "soft drink" brands of said. In Germany, iced tea was everywhere!

Now as to the quoted uncomprehension about lack of coffee. I am in the very small (I mean very, very small) minority of Americans who cannot stand coffee and in fact I have never had a cup of coffee in my life.

If you have never had a cup, how do you know you can't stand it?
I very rarely have cups of tea, but have never had iced tea, the idea just doesn't appeal at all.

@ Maguari - Sodas such as Coke are syrupy and do not quench your thirst. Alcoholic beverages are known to dehydrate people, rather than hydrate.

@ TeaLovingDave - "soft drink" teas, such as prepackaged Nestea, do not taste nearly as good as brewed iced tea (and often have corn syrup, so not very good for you).

@ ZooBoy 28 - I know I do not like coffee because I had a sip once as a child (yes that was long ago) but mainly because I cannot stand even the smell of it now, so I am sure the taste would not be any better.

You are right on the first account, by and large, as homemade drinks always are nicer - but wrong on the second as corn syrup isn't really a "thing" over on this side of the pond - we use sugar.

Of course, considering the fact that I believe the standard way you lot make iced tea - especially in the South - is to add enough sugar to the tea that it more or less stands up without the assistance of a jug or glass, the question of whether it is good for you or not is moot.

That said, the instant tea produced by Whittards of Chelsea - which can be reconstituted into a hot drink or an iced tea - is damn nice.

Coke quenches my thirst just fine. And alcoholic beverages act as a slight diuretic (as is the caffeine in tea, so watch how strong you brew if you're having more than one!) but one glass of beer and lager is still a net hydrator, so long as you don't keep drinking all day. Besides, we were talking about cooling off, not hydration, weren't we? :p

Saw the baby gentle lemur today, will try and upload a photo tomorrow. Some nice new direction signage going up today.

It is true in restaurants throughout the southeast United States, they offer both sweet tea and regular tea (both being iced). The sweet tea does seem to be one part sugar to one part liquid - nasty stuff. However, I am from the western United States where we do not have sweet tea. All the brewed teas served in restaurants are of the standard unsweet variety and most of us add a very small amount of table sugar. Some are nicely flavored with mango or similar. My favorite is at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum which has prickly pear (cactus) tea.

There are many refreshing drinks, but only one winner and that is a pint of shandy.

For those US folks not familiar with this thirst quenching delight it is a simple 50/50 mixture of beer and lemonade (Sprite or 7up in US). No ice at all, so both beer and lemo must be fridge cold. If you don't do alcohol, () then it even works with non-alcoholic beer, but not as nice.

and the pub at Chester Zoo serve a nice pint of cold shandy too.

Well if we are going to start talking about lemonade and 50/50 mixes, there is a popular such mix here with half lemonade and half iced tea. It is called an Arnold Palmer. I do use lemonade in my home brew iced tea, but not nearly at that strong of a ratio.

Chester Zoo (food and drink free)

Now on show in the Tropical Realm asr Green Crested Lizards (Bronchocela cristatella) with the Indochinese Box turtles and Rio Maranon Poison Frogs (Excidobates mysteriosus) in the former eyelash viper vivarium.

The zoo no longer holds vicuna.

Note for the hungry and thirsty - this thread is free of food and drink (touch wood); but charges are still made for refreshments at Chester Zoo.
