Well it hasn't been confirmed that the elephants will be coming from Dublin, but if they do like @Jaxton said it's likely that mother and daughter pair Yasmin and Anak will be imported. They are not planning on recieving any males so no, I'm guessing by the time the elephants are set to arrive in Cincinnati (2023), Yasmin and Anak's young male calves will have been sent away to bachelor herds.Any word on which elephants from Dublin’s collection they are likely to acquire? I wonder if any of the calves they are bringing will be any of the young males.
I am glad some zoos are willing to make the commitment to create a multi generational herd structure for Asiatic elephants in North America. Having followed the developments over time it is an issue that needs to be addressed as so many zoos have phased out elephants or only maintain elderly non reproductive animals or wrong associations of proven bull with reproductively senescent cows ....
According to the zoo and Info in the captions on YouTube, the new elephant exhibit isn’t opening until 2024
But why would the zoo separate Yasmin from sister and niece, and Anak from her aunt and her half sister AshaWell it hasn't been confirmed that the elephants will be coming from Dublin, but if they do like @Jaxton said it's likely that mother and daughter pair Yasmin and Anak will be imported. With 7 females, they would eventually have to break up the herd because I doubt Dublin has the room to have 7 breeding females (when the younger girls reach maturity), a bull and calves. And moving Yasmin and Anak would be the best way to split the herd because the other five females are Bernhardine, her daughters & grand-daughter. I believe several years ago Rotterdam did a similar thing when they sent Bernhardine, Yasmin and Anak to Dublin and seperated them from their mom Irma and sister Bangka. But why would the zoo separate Yasmin from sister and niece, and Anak from her aunt and her half sister Asha
Can you post the updated site plan for the Elephant Trek? And maybe ask about the future of Bear Hill/Lords of the Arctic as well?Any update requests? I'm heading off for my first time today![]()
The only captive animals in Swan Lake are the two trumpeter swans, the rest are wild. Are the animals in swan lake wild? If they are captive which ones are?
I recall being told on here that some of the Ruddy ducks are captive. The only captive animals in Swan Lake are the two trumpeter swans, the rest are wild.
I had suspected that the waterfowl count was too good to be wild, and it is in a zoo after all. Are the turtles at least wild? There are quite a few birds on Swan Lake that are a part of the collection besides the swans, including ruddy ducks, a bufflehead, Barrow's goldeneyes, hooded mergansers, northern pintails, and Carolina wood ducks.
It does not make sense to me either.Ok this is something I’m not understanding. If the zoo isn’t opening their elephant exhibit until 2024 why are they receiving 2 new females in 2023 despite having no more space for additional elephants in their current exhibit

The current elephant complex is 1.7 acres. The elephants rotate between yards, so Sabu is not always in the small yard. When Sabu is in the main yard he is always with Jati though.like, how big is their exhibit? Is it true the bull is living in a yard that’s less than a acre? I know their exhibit isn’t big but I’m not exactly sure how big

Just because the exhibit isn’t opening until 2024 doesn’t mean that the exhibit won’t be ready before then. The barn is set to be complete first, anyways, so they should be able to take the new animals in and let them get adjusted and start introductions to the current animals ahead of opening. The zoo is committed to keeping the current herd.Ok this is something I’m not understanding.
