Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News 2021

oh so is the barn opening in 2023?
The entire complex will open together in 2024; however, most construction should be completed and they’ll be ready to take the new animals ahead of time. The animals will need time to adjust to their new space, their new keepers, and their new herd mates ahead of being introduced to the public. This will give other facets of the complex, like the landscaping, a little time to mature as well. You don’t want to rush an endeavor as monumental and multifaceted as this.

that still doesn’t make any sense why these 2 cows are coming in 2023 if the complex itself including that new barn isn’t opening until 2024

…It makes perfect sense. I just don’t think you’re understanding what I’m saying. The complex will not be opening to the public until 2024, but the construction will already be mostly complete and they’ll be ready to take the animals into the new barn in 2023. This will give them time to adjust to everything I mentioned above. The completion of construction and the opening of the exhibit do not need to happen at the same time, and honestly, they shouldn’t.

OH to the public. Got it. Yes that makes more sense now. Thank you

The Sakis were indoors, and the Mueller's gibbons were in the orangutan exhibit while their usual island sits empty at the moment. There was also no sign of the Lorises.
Were the gibbons inside or outside? I’ve never seen them at Cincinnati, and my two visits this year without any sign of them made me fear they were dead :(.

On my visit in June I only spotted the Lar gibbons inside, and there was also a Pygmy slow loris in the building. There was no sign of the sakis (Were they in the temple-like exhibit?) and the Angolan colobus were in the outdoor exhibit with the hollow tree.

The Cincinnati Zoo is working with the Dublin Zoo to secure a deal with the them that would bring Yasmin, Anak, Sanjay, and Kabir to the zoo in 2023. Once this group of elephants arrive, Sabu will be moved down to the Elephant Trek in 2023 but Mai Thai, Schottzie, and Jati will stay at Elephant Reserve until 2024 when they move down to Elephant Trek for the grand opening. The current plan for the elephant reserve is to renovate the inside and merge the outdoor areas into one. Once this is complete the current plan is to expand the zoos Masai Giraffe herd and move them all to the elephant reserve. The current plan for the Gibbon Islands after the Siamangs leave is to bring in another species of gibbon to put on their former island. Just a reminder none of these plans are set in stone yet except for the elephants arrival times and the current elephants transitions to elephant trek.

Where was this announced?

It's exciting that this has been confirmed! Hopefully, everything will go as planned. I wasn't expecting Sanjay and Kabir to arrive with Yasmin and Anak. It's great that these two boys will be arriving as well, they will be valuable for breeding in the future! Also, both Yasmin and Kabir are unrelated to the Motek x Warda line which makes them very valuable.

The giraffe plan seems really confusing. Wasn't the whole point of Giraffe Ridge to kick off the Africa Expansion and provide a larger space for a breeding group? And what would go into the giraffe space if they did go into Elephant Reserve?

Who know what I just realized is that Yasmin will meet her aunt Schottzi, Schottzi is the full sister of Yasmin's mother Irma and the grandmother of Yasmin's daughter Anak.

Once could say that disappointment of a hippo exhibit could use that elephant space better...
