Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2018

The new elephant barn looks like it will be underground that makes the most sense I just can't see them cramping more elephants in a building that's been out dated for the elephants they have or any future ones they bring in.

No, I can imagine Wildlife Canyon will be demolished (there isn't much to begin with) sometime in July/August 2019 and Roo Valley will open in May, June or July 2020. Tiger Canyon was closed in August of 2011 and was completely resigned into Cat Canyon by July 2012.
Wildlife Canyon will be demolished well before that, once they get the animals to new locations in the fall.

The family group of gorillas under Jomo has finally be as reintegrated as it will get following Anju's death last year. Orphaned Elle has been paired with surrogate mom Mara. Jomo was then reintroduced and Mlinzi and Gladys followed. Attempts were made to bring Asha and Mona back in but Asha's personality conflicted with the new set up. To keep the youngsters together Mona has been separated from her mother and reintegrated into the troop by herself and is doing well. The future for Asha will be determined now that Mona is good to go without mom.

Well I found out why there are wild sheep "mixed" in with Elephants in the Elephant Trek graphic. I have no idea why the zoo didn't include it on their website but there's a different, fuller map I found on the video of a news site. In the back left corner, will be another large exhibit for these wild sheep. Fingers crossed that it was just a poor representation of a Takin:)

See for yourself:

See for yourself:

Or Himalayan Tahr, honestly. Or maybe Bharal?

If you zoom in on that particular rendering, though it is of poor quality, the animals appear to be much thicker and taller than a sheep. It would be nice to get a new wild goat/sheep species but it would also be nice to keep at least one of the Asian hoofstock from Wildlife Canyon.

It defiantly looks like a takin in the corner of the video.

Also, I'll be visiting the zoo next week. Anything special I'll be able to see that is new?

Alright good, I'm not the only one that thought that.

Well I don't know when your last visit was, or if you've ever visited at all. So the most recent developments over the last year were the new indoor gorilla exhibit, the Wings of the World renovations, and the new fantastic Galapagos tortoise expansion that made Monkey Island now part of the Reptile House. Don't count on my word but it also appeared that the new bald eagle exhibit may be ready by the time of your visit.

Cincinnati Zoo Changes
  1. In Jungle Trails, the Gray Bamboo Lemurs were off exhibit, and some Pottos.
  2. There was no signage for Warthog in Africa, and Walter was not there.
I'm pretty sure there is more, but that's all I remember as of right now.

Last Sunday I noticed there was no signage for Walter and had difficulty finding him. Later someone pointed him out, hiding in a blind spot in between the two front viewing areas.

I forgot to mention the absence of the bamboo lemur, but I didn't because they seem to he off and on display every other time I visit.

It appears that the Keas are no more. The Kea Encounter/Free Flight Aviary has reverted back to it's original roots.

From their Facebook post:
Our newly renovated free-flight aviary is now open from 10am-3pm daily. Come in and visit with some amazing feathered friends including the inca tern, magpie goose, nicobar pigeon and more! [There's also Gulls]
