Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2014

Construction on the Stillwater Lodge Event Center has begun which included the removal of several large trees from the site located directly across from the new carousel.

The Waterfall in the Rainforest has been shut of as part of a new zoo study on how sound effects the zoos small primates (White Fronted Marmosets,Pied Tamarins,Goldeis Monkey and Golden Lion Tamarins).

Railings have been installed in the Francois Languar exhibit. They appear to be keeper staff safety related rather than having anything to do with the animals.

The deck at the Grizzly Bear exhibit has been torn down and will be replaced to stamped concrete and wooden varnished railings to match what was put it at the former Polar Bear enclosure.

Red Pandas are back on exhibit.

Wasn't that deck only put in a year or two ago? I know they replace the original deck but why tear down a brand new one for concrete? Were they having issues with it?

The white-headed buffalo weaver is now where the African gray parrots used to be until those were moved to Elephant Crossing.
Two eastern hellbenders are now on exhibit at PCA, near the robust black spider monkeys and Mueller's gibbons.
The Aldabra tortoises have been moved in for the winter.
Can you get to PCA from Waterfowl Lake?

I ask myself each year, "Would it not be easier to build an exhibit for the Aldabra tortoises next to the hospital so they would not have to go through the year trip back and forth to the hospital?" This would make sense, but when have Cleveland's choices made any sense.

There is a path in Waterfowl Lake, but it was closed this year. This path is the easier to walk. This summer, they rather you wait a half-hour for a tram, have a heart-attack up the hill be Australian Adventure, or have your fear of heights challenged via the deck.

New baby at CMZ! A baby Bornean orangutan was born on October 5, and the Zoo is eagerly awaiting the chance to introduce it to the public. It’s the first orangutan birth at the Zoo since 2006.

The baby orangutan, whose gender and name have yet to be determined, was born off exhibit to first-time mom, Kera Wak, 16, and dad, Tiram, 28. The baby is Tiram’s fifth offspring. It is the fourth orangutan born at the Zoo since The RainForest opened in 1992.

It seems like the male snow leopard is leaving. Apprently, there is a transfer crate in his exhibit, so that does seem to be whats happening. Does anyone know where he's going? I wonder if hes going on loan until they give him a new exhibit with the 10 plan (like what they did with their elephants) or if hes leaving permanently. I would think it has something to do with the female dying recently.

It has been common practice for the zoo to tarp off certain cat exhibits in the Primate Cat and Aquatics Building for breeding purposes however in this case it turns out not to be.The exhibit was tarped while it was converted as a additional space for the golden bellied mangabeys due to the fact that the zoo had to euthanize its female snow leopard.

Much better news to report in the African Savannah all three of the zoos female Masai Giraffes are pregnant !

I know this is a bit late but do you know why the female was put down?

The 14 year-old male at CMZ will move to San Francisco. A year-old male from Winnipeg and a 5 year-old female from the Bronx are to move in according to the recently released breeding and transfer plan.
