Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2018

I am set to go to Cleveland in June, so who knows, might get a chance to go to the zoo.

It is going where the current Amur leopard exhibit is located along with the vacant picnic area next door. There have been updates to the previously released plan. Updated plans have not been made available. I have added the link to the only plan made available for the cheetah exhibit. It also includes an earlier version of Asian Highlands. I would expect to see a final plan by August if it follows the timeline that Asian Highlands has followed.

The lions desperately need a new exhibit. It’s so outdated and small.

Before Steve Taylor left, there was plans for a new exhibit. I never cared for the plans. His master plan focused so much on Africa. I am glad when Chris Kuhar took over, the zoo changed focus to renovate/replace exhibits that need to be done like Wilderness Trek and PCA. They are older exhibits. The lion exhibit is in better condition than exhibits slated to be done. With the Food Court beside it, there are some limitations to that location. When it is done, it should not take out any of the Africa Savanna exhibit. I also hope it would not touch the flamingo exhibit.

The zoo told me that they are still evaluating who will move into the snow leopard and red panda exhibit. They are also still evaluating the rebrand of Primate, Cat, and Aquatic Building. Asian Highlands opens mid-June.

Welcome Nneka!

Nneka came to us from the San Francisco Zoo, and is now the youngest gorilla in our troop, joining Freddy, Mokolo and Kebi. The group continues to successfully bond as they establish their social structure. Please note guests may or may not see her in her home at the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building - we’re giving her lots of choices at this time. Stay tuned, we'll continue to keep you posted on the troop!

Mom and cubs will stay at PCA until the cubs are old enough to move. Their father and sister will be in Asian Highlands when it opens.
Seems only fair. I assume the sister to this set of cubs will eventually be sent on B/L and the exhibit will be vacated for mum and cubs at the new location.

My guess is that they will re-do the Lion exhibit in the coming decade, but as part of a larger plan of looking at all of the food court and welcome areas. At some point they will want to move their entrance to somehow make the Rainforest in the zoo as another exhibit but that would be a massive capital campaign I think. I agree, since Kuhar has come on board there is a lot he's done to shore up several parts of the zoo that were weak and I think they are building towards a major transformative sort of renovation soon. I know they want to do the gorilla exhibit at some point and that will be big but I think they are moving towards a larger vision that they haven't made public yet. No proof of it, just a feeling.
