Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Metroparks Zoo News 2024

Two new attractions have been announced for the summer: Dino Cove and Swan Boats. The zoo's statement:

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo today announced that dinosaurs are taking over Cleveland Metroparks Zoo! Opening on May 8, the Dino Cove experience near the Zoo’s Waterfowl Lake allows guests to get close to the largest animals to ever walk the earth.

Explore a collection of more than 25 animatronic dinosaurs, hands-on experiences including a fossil dig pit and dynamic photo opportunities. Stand alongside a 65-foot-long Brachiosaurus and 40-foot-long Tyrannosaurus Rex and much more. Guests can learn about dinosaur species across the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, including their diet and other dino facts.

Admission to Dino Cove is $3 for members, $4 for non-members per experience. General zoo admission is also required. Dino Cove is included in the Wild Savings Pass for $14.75, which gives guests access to Dino Cove, and one-day unlimited rides on the Circle of Wildlife Carousel, Boomerang Line train rides and 4-D Theater. Wild Savings Pass also includes a keepsake KeyBank Adventure Key to explore more than a dozen new Adventure Key interactive learning stations throughout the zoo and new for 2024, locations at all five Cleveland Metroparks Nature Centers.

This summer zoo guests can experience the zoo like never before from the water aboard Swan Voyage presented by Primrose schools. For the first time ever, guests can paddle through picturesque Waterfowl Lake in the heart of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on new Trumpeter Swan paddle boats that seat up to five passengers. More details and an official opening date will be announced soon. Wild Savings Pass holders will save a dollar off the Swan Voyage experience.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance the experience for our guests by creating unique opportunities to experience the Zoo,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar. “With the addition of Dino Cove and Swan Voyage near the Eagle Zip Adventure, Waterfowl Lake will be the Zoo’s entertainment hub this season.”

Tickets for Dino Cove and Swan Voyage may be purchased at several locations throughout the zoo including the Zoo’s main box office and three other attraction ticket stations.

Went to Cleveland today. It was absolutely beautiful and everybody was out and about.
  • Flamingo exhibit is still closed
  • Birds are back in the aviary at Elephant Crossing
  • Spur Wing Geese have returned to the Rhino exhibit for the summer
  • Onion the Seal was a no show
  • The tiger cubs now have access to all four yards.
  • Grizzly and American Black Bears are rotating exhibits again. American Black was in the left exhibit, Grizzlies on the right.
  • Sloth Bears were a no show
  • Wooly Bill is back in action and working better than I've seen in a long time
  • Bontebok calf was outside.
  • Overheard that a new female Snow Leopard has been brought in and a male is on the way to form a new breed program.
  • Second Gharial was on exhibit (Haven't seen the 2nd for a while)
  • A single spotted Turtle was in the Gharial exhibit. There used to be alot more turtles/fish in the exhibit

So the cage where the Superb Starlings were is now empty?
I wonder where the male tiger was?
I wouldn’t be surprised if that 2nd Gharial is a different individual. I haven’t saw 2 in a long time.
Is Sombra the female Snow Leopard still there?

- Didn't check the Starling cage bc I honestly forgot it was there.
- Hector was out in a different yard. However they were all in the way back of the exhibit in the shade so I couldn't get pics.
- Sombra's still out. I was told how to tell it's her, look at her ears. When she had her cubs they would nibble her ears and there's a few spots where the fur is messed up permanently.

Definitely excited for Snow Leopards to start breeding again in Cleveland.
I thought the cubs had access to all 4 yards? That would make Hector inside?

I misworded the statement. Previously the had been mainly in the larger yard by the bison but today they were in the first yard on the left as you enter TP from the Fulton Bridge. I'd seen in the smaller yards before but never the larger one with a pool.

My partner and I went on Wednesday, the 15th this past week and there's quite a lot going on!
  • Because of early-entry hours for members, we went right to the PCA and we were the only ones in the building. We got to all three of the gorilla babies, and that was indescribable. Kayembe is a little prince that just wants to play, Kunda is carefully protected and Jameela was riding on someone's shoulders (not sure which gorilla it was, I don't think it was Freddie though). Also of note, tram service doesn't begin until the zoo officially opens at 10:00
  • The Dinosaur exhibit is open and... underwhelming, unless you're into the animatronic/dinosaur thing. $4 for non-members, $3 for members, it took us about 20-25 minutes to walk through. Real cool idea if you have kids, otherwise it's a once-a-season thing for us
  • Swan boats are open, $15 each and can seat up to 5 (how does the 5th person paddle?)
  • All three food stands were open
  • We made it to the Steffee center to catch a black howler monkey finishing up their exams. The technicians actually held up the howler monkey for us and a volunteer to take a picture/selfie with, which was awesome
  • The tiger cubs have access to all yards now (previously stated in thread) and seemed like they were playing around with Hector a lot more now

Im hoping they're with Hector when I go this week. Every time I've seen him since the Cubs were born he's been alot more vocal and seemingly wanting to interact with them.

Cleveland Zoo gives update on new home for primates

The Cleveland Zoo – established in 1882 – is gearing up to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2032. During the Metroparks May 16 board meeting, representatives from the Cleveland Zoo updated the board on plans to renovate its RainForest attraction into a Primate Forest as part of that milestone.

The Primate Forest is set to be a new home for gorillas, orangutans and other animals and plants, according to the Metroparks. It also includes transforming the entrance for zoo guests.

The Primate Forest “kind of started as a gorilla project. But what it has evolved into is a project that allows us to create enhancements to our RainForest building,” said Christopher Kuhar, the zoo’s executive director.

The RainForest is more than 30 years old and “needs significant maintenance,” according to Kuhar. It also presents an opportunity to re-imagine the zoo’s “awkward” front entrance to one that is “more welcoming,” he said.

I'm hoping the final exhibit has accomodations for plenty of non-primates, either from the current RainForest exhibit or new additions to the collection. Part of why I enjoyed the RainForest in 2019 was because of the variety of species on display, and I hope that diversity is continued with Primate Forest.

Went to Cleveland. Here's what was new:
  • Flamingo exhibit is still closed. The employee I talked to isn't sure when it'll reopen.
  • Asian Lantern props are set up in the entrance plaza and African Savanna.
  • Tiger Cubs are getting big. One of them pawed at the water but didn't go all the way.
  • Path to Waterfowl next to the outdoor Koala exhibit is temporarily fenced off.
  • Saw a group of zoo officials in the entrance to the RainForest pointing at parts of the temple wall. I couldn't hear what was being said due to how busy it was, so I wonder if it has anything to do with Primate Forest.
  • Sloth Bears were together in the same exhibit. Don't see this very often.
  • Heard the wolves howling for the first time.
  • I was told by a volunteer that V the Black Bear had taken a few splashes in her pool. I would have loved to see it.
  • Both Gharials off exhibit (They've been very hit or miss lately)
  • Talked to two different employees in the RainForest about if October is when it closes. One said that “around then” is possibly when the road work begins but they hadn't heard anything abouy that being when the building closes. Second said they'd heard “In the fall” but no details

That’s good to see the Sloth Bears in the same exhibit this breeding season!
Did they have access to 2 habitats or just 1?
