Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Cleveland Zoo next project

Just left the zoo and got some updates on upcoming projects-
- Tropical Bears should be returning in June, with Bear Hollow opening July.
- No word on how many Sloth/Andean Bears will return
- Phase I of Primate Forest will not break ground this year. The employee I spoke to says it will happen in 2024/2025 at the earliest
- No plans to reopen the Homestead

The sloth bears will likely be Balawat and Shiva. Balawat is in Cleveland. Shiva is temporarily in Columbus.

My wonder is if they'll bring in more Andean Bears or just Ceyenne since Alfred passed away in CT. And I highly highly (add a few more highlys) doubt they'll bring Scruffy back.

Scruffy needs a retirement apartment behind the scenes like Muffin had in Akron.

I don't understand why the zoo would bring Cayenne back. Moves can be stressful and risky, especially for elderly animals, so it wouldn't have made sense to move Cayenne to CT if the plan was a return to Cleveland eventually anyways. Furthermore, there's no point in bringing an elderly individual into a habitat designed for breeding when there's a number of young bears born within the past few years who could be better options for Cleveland.

Is Cayenne elderly? I was under the impression she was the younger Andean Bear.

The WYRAS building in the parking lot has been torn down.

It seems Bear Hollow is gearing up to open sooner than later. The first two yards/viewing areas have glass and the mesh is starting to be installed. Also Shiva the Sloth Bear has returned 20230621_133829.jpg

With two attractions in Australian Adventure, the Homestead and Bugideer Aviary seemingly down for good, it makes me wonder if we'll see some enchantments to the land while The RainForest overhaul happens

According to the zoo employee I spoke with today, renovations on the existing RainForest will begin "Early next year". This is not the Orangutan/Gorillas expansion. From what I saw today, it's definitely needed as The RainForest was really showing its age today

Both the Reinberg Homestead and Bugideer Aviary are confirmed by zoo staff to be permanently closed and are "Evaluated for future use" since they are both permanently closed to the public, so it's possible we will see changes to those areas

Australian Adventure’s 25th is coming.

I really hope a refresh/overhaul is coming, because based on how it looked yesterday, I think we're seeing the beginning of the end for Australian Adventure. Every exhibit across from the nature pavilion was empty, the BBQ place, Aviary, and Homestead are permanently closed, and the Yagga Tree seems to be on its last legs, as it looked REALLY bad when I went through it (aside from Bill seeming to be down for good, it just looks really unloved inside. The top layer is still closed, the rock work is falling apart). I wouldn't be surprised if they start closing the remaining parts of the area one by one, until it just cuts off at the train tracks and Wallabys
