Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #1

We see a rat so often on the slope from the wolves to the tigers that we have named him Roland lol (very original)

Glad you had a great day Andii, they used to have loads of mice in Rajy old enclosure, you cant blame them a very easy source of food and shelter!

Yeah there are many down the old part of the zoo where the capuchins and sayan are now kept.

That is the area I saw them in.;) Zoos are ideal places for rats, with plenty of food supplies virtually laid out for them. However they can be a danger both by spreading diseases and by taking baby birds or eggs etc.

I would think in Colchester's case the valley area with the rather stagnant lakes and limited visitor access must be a little haven for them. I guess Colchester are always having to control them.

The lakes are filled with cleaned water direct from the sewers. This is why is pongs a bit sometimes!

Found out from the zoo's facebook page that they no longer keep pallas Cats, after the last one died in december. Geoffroys cats are now in the enclosure. I'm not currently sure which of the cats died in december but did think last year that there was only one :o.
Zooleopard- are there plans to get more or are there no plans for these in the forseeable future?

No plans to introduce more to the zoo at this moment in time. The zoo keep 1:2 Geofforys cats at the moment. Amazon is the female though i dont know the names of the other two.

Rasputin was the male who died in early december after failing to respond to treatment. Rihanna the female died a while back now.

I've recently seen rats in the L'Hoest monkey enclosure, and in the summer there were at least 3 in the kids' playground up near the mandrills, hyenas etc !

Heavy Snow hits the zoo!

We would like to make all visitors aware that Colchester Zoo has been hit by heavy snow. Whilst the park remains open we strongly advise you not to visit the park today as the roads in the surrounding area are not all treated and snow is laying everywhere. Animal visibility will be restricted and whilst we are extremely grateful to think that you want to support us during this time, we would ask that you postpone any visits for today. We hope that you enjoy the snow safely and look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Why release a statement that contridicts itself???? If they are so concerned about peoples welfware and are advising people not to travel to the zoo, why state it is open!

I am knitting Roland a sweater as quickly as I can Pertinax! It is the terrapins I worry about in the cold!

There was notices when I went on christmas eve stating which parts of the zoo are closed I supose they want people to make up their own minds and not complain if they don't get their monies worth! Condensation was a problem when viewing the animals.

Just had a look at ISIS and it lists colchester as having no mongoose lemurs? Does anyone know wether they have gone?

Its a veiled encouragement to come to the Zoo! Saying its open advertises the fact, while at the same time warning people not to come covers them for any disappointments from slippery paths and closed exhibits. So anyone who comes can't complain as the management can fairly say 'we did warn you.'

Glad to hear it- I was worried about him in particular...;) The Terrapins really need neck warmers, don't they?

I haven't seen any photos in the papers of the Siberian Tigers at Colchester or elsewhere romping in the Snow yet, but I'm sure it won't be too long...

Siberian Tigers must be enjoying the Snow at the following Zoos/parks;

Colchester, Linton, Banham, Whipsnade, Marwell, Howletts/PL, Longleat, Dartmoor, Highland WP,- must be a few more too. Though Sumatrans must find it a bit strange maybe.

I hope so.;) A little taste of their natural climate.:)

I am sorry to announce that Ed has died at the zoo. I am deeply saddened by his death as Edmund was the first Giraffe at the zoo I knew personally. He arrived nine years ago in 2001 and I was really excited when he came. I shall hopefully update you guys soon on the cause of his death.

In the mean time the zoo has released a press statment regarding his death:

Colchester Zoo is deeply saddened to announce the loss of Edmund the Giraffe during the night of Tuesday 19th January. On arriving at the enclosure in the morning Keepers found that he had sadly passed away during the night. His death has been a shock to all at Colchester Zoo and due to the nature of his passing and previous bouts of ill health a post mortem and further tests will be conducted with the hope to establish what may have been the cause.

Edmund was our oldest giraffe; born on the 13th February 1993 at Whipsnade Zoo, and has been here with us at Colchester Zoo for nine years, arriving in February 2001.

Zoological Director Anthony Tropeano commented “I and all the staff involved in looking after Edmund are deeply saddened by today’s events. He was a hugely popular animal with staff and visitors alike and will be keenly missed.”

R.I.P Edmund
