Now for the Summer thread.

Maybe the new nature centure will be opening soon...

Went today and had another interesting visit. Took a lot of pics that I will try ot post on here later and managed to watch the Giraffe move.

I hope the nature area opens this year to, as hoping will get a different view of the tigers!! as well as the nature of course lol

New Male Giraffe 'Epesi' arrived at 6am Wednesday morning. Koife and Century were planned to move together but unfortunatley this didnt happen due to Koife kicking the door in of the trailer and nearly injuring a keeper. Century left around 7am. Koife was then moved later about 3.30pm with no trouble.

Pictures are now in the gallery: http://www.zoochat.com/gallery/colchester-zoo/

Hi Zoo Leopard, thanks for the updates on Century and Koife's move, any photo's/video's you have of this I would love to see, if you could either put them on here or maybe send them to me that would be great, my nephew is truly heartbroken at them leaving
Thanks

Press Release regarding New Male Giraffe 'Epesi':

New male reticulated giraffe joins the collection to form breeding group and Koife and Century depart for a new home!

On Wednesday 2nd June a new male reticulated giraffe joined the collection at Colchester Zoo. Transferring here from Nurnberg Zoo in Germany, he was born in August 2008 and is called Epesi. Epesi’s arrival will allow Colchester Zoo to form its first ever breeding group of giraffe, as he joins our two female purebred reticulated giraffes, Lili and Isha who were both born in July 2008 and arrived at Colchester Zoo in September 2009 from Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic.

As the three giraffes are still at a young age, they won’t be able to breed until they have matured, but in the future we hope that they will be able to take a successful and active role in the EEP breeding programme for this species.

Epesi is at the moment, a slightly smaller size than the two females, and has already been successfully mixed with the two girls. He is still a little shy and nervous of his new surroundings, and has been given access to the outside hard standing section of the enclosure to allow him to see the paddock and his new neighbours! Epesi will go through a slow introduction process to the other inhabitants of the Kingdom of the Wild paddock including the White Rhino, Greater Kudu and Zebra, to ensure that he settles in and adapts to his new surroundings comfortably.

Koife and Century our two male giraffes transferred out from the collection on Wednesday 2nd of June to their new home at Cotswold Wildlife Park. As Koife is a hybrid male and Century is a Baringo giraffe we were sadly unable to breed from them with our two purebred reticulated females, and so they have been transferred out to a new home. Both male giraffes will be sadly missed by staff and visitors alike, with both being firm favourites at public feeds, with their own distinctive personalities! We hope that both Koife and Century will have a happy future at Cotswold Wildlife Park, and will continue to lead happy lives together in their new home.

Its pleasing to see that it has gone successfully so far, I only hope that things go well and that when breeding age eventually comes they will start being able to breed.:)

Some good pictures here, thanks for the link ZooLeopard.:) Epesi is very similar in size to the females.

I went to Colchester with a friend yesterday. I hadn't been for a few weeks because of work. Rajang was in fine form. Tiga is slowly developing his cheek flanges and is a lovely boy. The chimp family were all very relaxed and Talia seems to be growing and developing quickly. The new giraffe is lovely and I'm glad the zoo have moved the metal barrier so you can feed the girls, as when I went last time they weren't quite big enough to get the food :) The new lions seem to have settled in well and were out enjoying the sun.

I saw a facebook page a photo of a wolf cub? I thought the alpha male died and all the rest were offspring?

Have I missed something or am I wrong? I am sure i will soon be put right lol

Also reply from Colchester zoo regarding the nature area! Doesnt look like completion till at least next year

Thank you for your comment, yes our Nature area construction is still continuing on the site behind Tiger Taiga at bottom of the park. Construction work takes place on the site outside of the main bird breeding season, but due to poor weather over the winter months and pressing developments within the main zoo site, construction work had been ... See morehalted on the site. However, this has had a positive impact on the nature area, as due to limited disturbance, numerous native species have started to recolonise the site. We hope to resume development work on the site over the Winter months, and will let you know of our progress and when we hope to open the site to visitors.

That's what I thought too. The train 'talk' always states Talullah is the dominant female and the rest are her offspring .... though guess that wouldn't necessarily stop them breeding ?

Thanks Gill I am not going mad then, but my post was gibberish (reading it back lol :D)

Does anyone know what the plans for the wolf pack is?

If they are planning on keeping them together surely a more permanent form of contraceptive is needed?

If they are planning on (trying) to introduce a new breeding line, to me that seems very difficult given the enclosure and the structure of the pack now that they have (possibly) started inbreeding?

I guess this probably is low on Colchester's list of prioities. We'll have to see how they get cracking on it.;)
