Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2010 #3

Incase anyone forgot about the old fella,

Rajang turned 42 today! :)

I shall be going to see the big man tomorrow with some treats :) tomatoes and a couple of pineapples!!!

He was on fine form when I saw him on Thursday, even though Tiga was trying to wind him up by throwing blankets at him

Press Release Regarding Wolf cubs:

Call of the Wild has seen the addition of new wolf cubs that are believed to have been born towards the end of May, this year.

Having initially remained hidden in their den, Keepers have been able to spot 6 cubs so far as they have started to emerge into the outside of the enclosure.

The cubs have been born to mum, Akila, and are still very small, though some can occasionally be seen venturing out into the enclosure alongside the other adults.

It will soon be getting rather crowded in the wolf enclosure with that large pack.

Maybe scrap the nature area and provide a large enclosure under the tree's for the wolves it certainly wouldn't cost alot to do this and it would make natural enclosure with no fake rock ;)

The current enclosure is partially shaded by trees and doesnt contain any fake rock :D

There are plans for the future of the area but you will just have to wait and see :)

I was talking in comparison with some area's of the zoo. However it is good to know there are plans for this area I hope viewing for the jackals is part of the process.

There are some rather nice photo's on Colchester zoos facebook page if anyone wants to look.

Colchester's wolf pack is a good display- several colour phases, good social interactions- the only problem as mentioned above, is the size of the enclosure for a growing pack. I hope perhaps that they can somehow enlarge it and keep (at least some of) this new litter of pups. The more wolves in the group, the better the display they make.

The idea is to keep all the current wolves together.

@little lion man, The wolf enclosure isnt top priority at the moment but has gone up the 'to do' list :P

Just returned from a quick visit to see Rajang. Went armed with slightly late birthday presents - a melon, kiwi fruit, Rivita breakfast biscuits (the new ones), tomatoes, an empty water bottle and some old socks for a bit of added enrichment.
Both Raj and Tiga looked to be on fine form. Also paid a very quick visit to Dende, the capuchins, squirrel monkeys (who have a capuchin in with them....) and the chimps. Didn't have time to see anything else as I didn't get there until 4.45! Booked a 2nd keeper shadowing experience for next week :)

The male Capuchin (i think its a male), has been in there for a while now after he was ousted from the current group.

I did thanks :) It was lovely and quiet as it was towards the end of the day. The chimps were bedding down for the night. Well, except for Tumba and Talia who were playing together :)

Rare Tamarins born at Colchester Zoo!

Endangered Twin pied tamarin twins have been born at Colchester Zoo on the 27th May! The Keepers cannot yet tell the sex of the youngsters, but the twins have been born to mum, Grace and Dad, Will. Grace was born in January 2007 and came to Colchester Zoo in November 2009 from Zoo Parc de Beauval in France, with Will being born in March 2001 and arriving at Colchester Zoo in July 2008 from Montreal Zoo, Canada.

The pied tamarin is notoriously hard to breed as it is highly sensitive and easily prone to environmental stress causing successful breeding to be extremely difficult. Colchester Zoo is therefore delighted to have had a successful breeding take place with the birth of the twins, and to make such an important contribution to the sustained existence of this endangered species.

Zoological Director, Anthony Tropeano, said, “We are absolutely delighted that all the hard work to bring Will and Grace together as part of this international breeding programme has resulted in the birth of these twins. This species is notoriously difficult to breed and only a handful of zoos have had success within the UK”.

It's great news about these twins! :D I hadn't even realised they had got a female in after they originally had 2 males :O
Does anyone know if any other UK collections have bred these, or are Colchester the first?
