The series of Zoo Days featuring Colchester is a couple years old I think.
As for Flossie the rhino, I believe there was a rumour earlier this year that she had died, but it was proved false. The only Colchester rhino who has died in recently years was the elderly male, Simba (?), but that was also last year or the year before.

Just thought I should confirm that Flossie is not dead.
I went to Colchester zoo this morning. The whole binterong and dik-dik area has been cleared to make way for it.
A lot of the animals were fairly inactive today and it was fairly busy. One of the amur leaopards was paceing at the back of the extention. Rajang was in the main indoor area fishing food out of a long tube. Tiga was outside sat on a sack eating melons very delicately removing the skin. As I returned Rajang had climbed to a quite low part of the logs in the main indoor area.
Fineally the new south american walk-through exibit is almost complete.

The zoo have bred two Waldrapp Ibis, with the pair hatching on June 12th!

Visited today:
-Musang the binturong has been seperated and is now next to the Jackals. You can see Musang to the left of the second Hunting Dog enclosure.
-The new South American Enclosure is due to be completed in the next few weeks.
-The new Wilds of Asia redevelopment is progressing nicely with the old geofforys cat enclosure now demolished.
-Chaco Chacalaca are housed in the Scarlet Ibis aviary temporarily until the new exhibit at 'Worlds Apart' as been completed.
-Elegant Crested Tinamou will no longer be kept in the collection.

The Crowned cranes housed in their enclosure opposite the Mandrills have successfully hatched 3 chicks! The three chicks were born to Wonky and Willow at the end of July 2010. Also there have been numerous Humbolt Penguin chicks.
I have been out of it for a month or so: forgive my innocence ... , what is the Wilds of Asia redevelopment exactly? Is it the to be refurbished former orang housing?

Its the redevelopment of the Wilds of Asia building and surrounding area. The Wilds of Asia buidling currently house Tamandua, Retic Python, Lion Tailed Macaques and Sail Fin Lizard. The redevelopment is well under way with the first stage of removing the kirks dik dik enclosure, the binturong enclosure and geofforys cat enclosure. The New development when completed will become home to Otters, Hornbills and Gibbons.

Has anyone else noticed the big poster by Colchester's entrance with words to the effect of 'Monkey around this summer', illustrated by a picture of Tumba ?
Am I being overly pedantic here, or am I right to feel a bit despairing of Colchester's publicity department who've chosen to put this out - given they spend so much time trying to educate visitors that chimps are apes, not monkeys ? Just seems a bit of an own goal to me and kind of feels like they are undermining the educational message they are usually at great pains to promote.
There are of course a whole selection of genuine monkeys at Colchester who could have graced said poster, or alternatively, a different wording could have been used ....

Went to zoo on Friday. New walk through area looks almost complete. Dik Dik enclosure has been removed and lots of work was going on to redevelop it. Dik Dik's are currently off show. Old orang enclosure also being redeveloped to house sun bears (also discussed on new arrivals from RSCC thread). Back again next Wednesday so will try and find out more regarding Wilds of Asia completion dates.

Some news from Today:
-The South American Enclosure is due to open any day now. The tamanduas are in as -well as the silvery marmosets.
-Scarlet Ibis aviary now empty and is being renovated. The old main Orangutan enclosure is nearly done with a pool, climbing equipment and bark chippings on the floor.
-Saki are happily settled in to their enclosure opposite the main squirrel monkey enclosure.
-Rhinocerous Hornbill in the old tamandua enclosure and Crowned pigeons in old South American walkthrough in the end enclosure.
-New Wilds of Asia development is progressing well; path down to anteaters closed and the enclosure in the middle of the anteater/leopard viewing demolished.
-Musang still in an enclosure next to Jackals.
-Now only five wolf pups.
