Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2011

Just a few things from a visit late last week:
-Signage at Cheetah exhibit stating how the female is off show as she is due to give birth in the next few weeks!
-Saw all of the smooth coated otter cubs running around in their exhibit
-And looks as though work could have started on the new sun bear exhibit?? as the hill near the old fossa exhibit was closed off and i could hear sawing, hammering, etc =P

Wow!

Uria's pregnant excellent!:)

Well on the zoos facebook page they posted this when someone asked;

Thank you for your comment, keepers are hopeful that Uria our female cheetah may be pregnant, however we cannot be certain if this is the case or of an estimated due date for any possible birth as we do not know for sure. Keepers will therefore continue to keep a close eye on Uria and continue to monitor her condition.

Visit update from today (30/6/11):

-Madagasgarn tree boa has replaced the giant flower beetles in the discovery centre.
-Demolition work has started for the new Sun Bear enclosure, the Waldrapp Ibis aviary has been partly demolished.
-Waldrapp Ibis are now in the walk in aviary near guest services, along with the red billed blue magpies, all of the species previously housed here are off show, apart from the Dik Dik who are in with the blue cranes at edge of africa.
-New perching poles and windows on the Andean Condor and Great grey owl aviaries.
-New smooth coated otter area looking good, but doesnt look like it will be complete for at least another month.
-No sign of any Spotted hyena's yet either

We're off to Colchester next week - really looking forwards to it. Just found out my husband has booked Meet the Aardvarks (there's a 2 for 1 offer on these experiences so very good value). When we did it last time they were off display while the new burrow was being built so it will be good to see them in the new(ish) enclosure. No doubt I shall get liquidised mealwoms sneezed on my best jeans again :)

This may be very old news, but I just came across this clip on Youtube of quite a brutal-looking rhino fight at Colchester.

Those injuries that the female sustains look pretty unpleasant. Were they? And were there any ramifications of this fight?

Had a brief visit yesterday and saw the following things:
- Smooth-coated otter and sun bear enclosures are progressing well, only the black hornbill enclosure is still standing on Hornbill Hill, and judging by the areas fenced off for demolition, the old fossa enclosure will also be included in the sun bear enclosure.
- Three young crowned crane chicks in the Edge of Africa enclosure.
- The two new male geladas were out with the troop and there seemed to be quite a lot of gesturing, chasing and vocalising between them, probably the most active I've seen them.

Had a quick visit at the start of the week and saw all 4 smooth-coated otter cubs out with their parents and being dragged into the water =) Also according to the Zoos website a ring-tailed lemur at lemur Islands was born on the 29th June to female, Madison and male, Rio!

Also does anyone know why the enclosure next to the African Wild Dogs is empty? (or maybe i just never see anything =P)

Had a wonderful day at Colchester last week. It was reasonably quiet and so went to a lot of the "meet the keeper"s and had the opportunity to chat to them. Arrived at about 11am and didn't leave until gone 6pm - and by 4.30 we almost had the place to ourselves which was wonderful, if a litle strange.

Meeting the aardvarks again was great. Apparently last year's baby is planned to go to Chester later this year. Didn't get a chance to ask what was with the lemons in the enclosure though :)

I visited Colchester zoo yesterday afternoon.

The front enclosures have been demolished to make way for the coming sun bear enclosure.

The enclosure furthest down "world of wings" has been refurbished.

My question is why did they move the black and white ruffed lemurs into the black and white colobus monkey enclosure? They've moved some of the black and white colobus monkeys into the cage in "Out of Africa" which they lived in a long time ago. They've refurbished the outside enclosure and are planning to extend the enclosure into the other enclosure it faces and right across to the cherry crowned mangabey enclosure.

just come from colchester day and had a great day out.

I think there might be another baby rhino on the way, as one female was really big in the belly and was shut from the other rhinos

That would be certainly news to me ..., and thus remain rather sceptical.
The rhino which is normally shut in is the elder female.

Why is she normally shut in? Its July, surely she'd be allowed full access to the paddock?

Someone on here had suggested she was fully integrated with the male following that horrendous-looking fight captured on Youtube.....

She could just be shut in for a lot of the time but might be quite often be coming out. She's a very old rhino now after all!

Otto the male was shut in away from flossy, emily, cynthia and zamba last time i went a few weeks ago
