Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2013

if you go on the Madagascar express you will notice the wolves will have another enclosure to go into that is about half the size of the show pen.
(but still is quite small);)

Yes I thought I remembered two enclosures adjoining, both admittedly quite small though. I guess these enclosures have not changed for many years since ?
Again presuming they did dig their way out, and in all fairness, it is quite difficult to easily monitor any den systems and tunnels that may develop in a wolf enclosure, of course they also don`t have to be near the perimeter in an enclosure that is already fairly small for them to easily reach it.

The Wolf enclosure at Colchester has always struck me as a bit rough and ready - but then the species doesn't need particularly sophisticated accommodation. More to the point perhaps is that it is very close to the car park.

Colchester seems stuck with its odd layout, with a long drive past the perimeter and then an internal road, before cars can be parked. Whatever exhibits are in that corner of the zoo are going to be tricky to design.

Incidentally most UK wolf enclosures are, or have been in the past, often been divided into two adjoining enclosures to facilitate cleaning and moving animals when disputes occur etc.. such as at Whipsnade, the old London Zoo one, New Forest Wildlife Park and Colchester etc.... the only shame is that they didn`t dig in the other direction!

The only problem with the second enclosure is you have to take the road train to see it.

The African wild dogs have 2 enclosures also, or rather their enclosure can be sub divided for practical/security purposes. I wonder which enclosure the wolves escaped from? the top one looked undamaged.

According to the zoo's web site Colchester-zoo.com the inspection failed to find a reason for the break out, foul play isn't suspected, but get out they certainly did, apparently they say the fence is stainless steel, it looks zinc plated to me but either way a fault was found and out they got. I was more surprised they could get out of the grounds so easily too, after all that is the last security barrier and should be just as escape proof. chain link does have a lot of give in it and if they push hard enough it can come up from the bottom tensioning wire and your away.

According to another piece of news they apparently got out through a HOLE IN THE FENCE!! ?

went this afternoon and noticed they have put rocks around the fence on the wolf exhibit.

I find that so puzzling and very hard to believe indeed …

I think it is more likely , as "Dean" suggested, that there was a fault with the mesh and that it possibly came away from the ground perhaps which would explain the need for using the rocks as a temporary measure ??
