Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2014

Exactly how many Cherry-crowned Mangabeys there are now (preferably age/ sex ratio too), and whether the two males kept seperate have been put back in the group. Any photos would be good too.;)

Similar with the Geladas?

According to Facebook, the pair of sun bears were let out into their new outdoor enclosure for the first time this morning.

the sun bears are not yet outside because there are still development work outside in place at the bottom of the enclosure. but the bears are much happier and active in there new home.

the male mangabeys are still in the temporary enclosure and will be until the new group of females have settled down.

the ant enclosure has been done up and a new colony are due next week.

there are no plans to bring in any new wolves.

and finally the new Lorrie enclosure is due open at Easter (don't get your hopes up)

sorry yes now i know that the bears have been outside. its just that there was still workers outside this morning and the bears have been locked in all day.

Went on a visit to the zoo today that involved lots of behind-the-scenes action; stroking a rhino, target-training a mandrill and so on.

Anyway, things that I found out:

- Sun bear enclosure is due to be opened tomorrow (29/3/2014) by celebrity vet and Free the Bears patron Steve Leonard
- Saw the newest baby mandrill born on February 26th, bringing the troop up to 21 individuals
- Darwin's rhea was now fully mixed in with the llamas and alpacas at Familiar Friends
- The old ruffed lemur island (viewable from the bridge) is being redeveloped as a new colobus monkey enclosure
- All but one of the silvery marmosets has moved out to Marwell Zoo, the remaining one is due to leave for Barcelona in the near-future
- As well as the one on-show baby, it turns out the second Komodo dragon clutch has yielded 19 youngsters that could possibly be the first instance of sperm storage in a Komodo dragon
- There are actually four greater kudu now in Kingdom of the Wild with a new male and female arriving

Similar with the Geladas?

- When I looked at the cherry-crowned mangabeys today there were the two males still living separately along with five back at the main enclosure (one separated due to an injury)
- Regarding geladas, although I am not sure of the sex ratio there are now twelve in the main enclosure- not sure if the male who was living separate in Kingdom of the Wild is still there now

Thanks for the Mangabey and Gelada information...

What is the target training a Mandrill all about?

It was part of a university field trip about zoo enclosure designs and animal training- got to participate in target training the younger animals and saw the keepers training the dominant male to open his mouth on command so they can check his teeth.

so why have the silvery marmosets left the collection when they were having such a great breeding result ? what will replace them ?

Will they be forming a breeding group with the Kudu??
Also has anyone heard anything about the maneless zebra arriving date?

Have i read that correctly that 20 Komodo dragons have been hatched, if so this is a significant result for Colchester.

Long visit today all kudu out in paddock getting on okay. Grace likes to show Cedric who is boss. Keeper said that he has been castrated so wont be breeding from him.

The maneless zebra are due soon 1 male 3 female from a zoo in Denmark.

The Heart of the Amazon was shut due to Kato the Saki Monkey being reintroduced to his parents.

Something was going on with the African hunting dogs, keepers stopped people from walking round from the wilds of Asia then opened it again to see 3 keepers coming out of the hunting dog shed with a animal create, brooms and a board, carried it into the underneath part and left it then let the two hunting dogs out and the keepers reappeared leaving the box.

Jo-Jo was out and about outside walking about for a short while then went back inside while Srey-Ya was asleep most of the day inside.

The rufous hornbills have been moved into their indoor enclosure with the windows covered up till they get use to being in there.

The group of Capuchin monkeys have now moved into the old sun bear enclosure with added poles and the tree house has been replaced with new wood.

No cheetahs were outside today both were shut in the back section.

Colchester zoo just said on their Facebook page "Unfortunately Spot, the African hunting dog, had been under veterinary care and treatment after having a seizure. Sadly his condition deteriorated and started to show concerning symptoms that were suggestive of epilepsy or a possible brain tumour. After veterinary investigation, the kindest decision was taken to put him to sleep."

which is very sad news for the zoo.

My first post in a very long time, I visited for a couple of hours today and noticed that the maneless Zebra have arrived, there were 1.3 (I assume) plus a youngster of which I am unsure of it's gender. I assume they arrived sometime in the week.

Thanks for this; I was eagerly awaiting their arrival.

Whereabouts are they and how easy are they to see?

They were in the kingdom of the wild enclosure, however they were confined to the hardstand area.

Many thanks for this; that's really what I feared - it's not easy to get a good view of them there. I wonder when they'll be given access to the main paddock.

The five zebras are four females and a colt. From the sounds of things they are already in the process of introducing them to the other species in the paddock

According to Facebook, the pair of rufous hornbills have now moved into their new aviary by the sun bears.

yet again i will be visiting the zoo again tomorrow is there anything anyone wants me to add to the gallery or look out for.:)
