Cologne Zoo Cologne Zoo News

That is really sad news :( In the meantime, the zoo has given more information. The fire broke out in the false ceiling between the hall itself and the event location underneath it, that's why they rule out arson. The animals died because of the smoke that entered the main hall, not the fire itself, which was luckily brought under control rather quick by the fire department. They are currently assessing the damage and safety. The zoo will open normally, but the house will remain closed until they checked/repaired everything.

Even more sad news from Cologne: 33-year old elephant female "Maejaruad" was put to sleep this morning, after bull "Bindu" had injured her hind leg the day before. Afterwards, the elephants were all separated and the staff was able to examine the injury. They were joined by elephant staff from Wuppertal zoo, but unfortunately they found out that the leg was irreparably broken, and so the decision had to be made. :(

Very sad news. :(
Her friend Chumpol also died in the same way, even though she was killed by another cow at the time.
One would think that due to his age, Bindu would not do anything like that, but unfortunately this is not the case.

It was also news to me that when Bindu was 13 years old, he killed a keeper. One source claims it was a case of the elephant not knowing his own strength and the incident (at Port Lympne no less) is not necessarily an indication of an abnormally aggressive bull (after all there’s a reason bulls are managed in protected contact); but was just mentioning it out of general interest/background on Bindu.

Any word on the extent of the damage and how long it will take to fit it ?

Recently, two nile lechwe (Kobus megaceros) were born.

According to their homepage, they were born on 22nd and 27th March, respectively. Some other recent births include a red howler monkey and a giant anteater.

Some news about the rainforest house: The last matschie's tree kangaroo is luckily fine, as is it's exhibit, where it continues to live.
The gibbon pair is also fine, but their enclosure seems to have sustained some damage, so the two have been given a temporary exhibit in the old elephant house.
It's still unclear when the house will reopen, the zoo states it will still take "a good while".

Does someone know if the Regenwaldhaus/Rainforest House is already open? I don't know if the renovation after the fire is a matter of weeks or months?

It's still closed. The newest information I've heard is still the one from my last post above.
