Cologne Zoo Cologne Zoo news

I have read articles that have been translated from German into English. Stating something about the elephant bull Sang Raja impregnanting cow Tong Koon is this true?

thats great thank you! are there any other known pregnancies? wouldn't of expected Tong Koon to be pregnant, as most pictures I've seen of Colonge elephants Sang raja has been covering Shu thu Zar and Maejaruad.

0:0:4 Amur Tiger cubs were born 6th November. Sadly 0:0:1 DNS but the remaining three are doing well. The mother is seven year old, Hanya who arrived from a French safari park at the start of this year and the cubs father is four year old, Altai who came over from Howletts in April

Translation:
We are delighted to announce that we since 6 November 2011 pups from our new spring 2011 at the Cologne Zoo retrieved Amurtigerpaar have.

After seeing the 7-year-old Amurtigerin "Hanya" from the African Safari Park, Plaisance-du-Touch at Toulouse / South of France with the 3-year-old tiger cat "Altai" from Howletts Wild Animal Park had zusammengewöhnt in southern England, it was the end of July to matings. 109 days after the first breeding date were born four tiger cubs. The mother looked after very well from the beginning to the pups. Unfortunately, one of the pups died after 6 days, probably due to weakness. This is such a large litter with tigers is not uncommon, as most are, on average, only two juveniles in the field observed at the mother as soon as they leave the breeding cave. With an average birth weight of 1300 - 1500g, the pups would now bring about 4,000 g on the scale. Eyes and ears are open and the visual acuity is now fully formed with 3.5 weeks. The first baby teeth have erupted. Since we do not want to risk disturbing the mother instinct in primiparous tigress, we have the young animals not yet had in hand, to determine the sex, for example. But it was already two weeks before birth and continues throughout a camera monitoring the litter shed. The first dose is approximately 6 - 8 weeks and made the booster is then a further four weeks later. As long as the vaccine is not given and the motor skills to come up with the steep terrain and deep moat of foreign investment deal, we can not show the young animals to the public. We expect it until early February 2012 will be ready.

Recently won an Amur or Siberian tiger coming 20 years ago, ie in 1991 at the Cologne Zoo. The Siberian tiger, better known as Siberian tigers come in the Amur-Ussuri region of Russia and the Far East, from near the port city of Vladivostok. After a disastrous decline of tiger subspecies to only about 50 animals in 1940, the wild stocks have increased by consistent protection measures by the Russian Government, 400. They are at risk but, like all tigers worldwide, continues to extinction by habitat destruction, overhunting of their natural prey, disease transmission from domestic dogs, and particularly of poaching for use in traditional Chinese medicine healing. In the latter part of each body of the tiger is attributed healing effects. Meanwhile, the estimated total number of wild tigers at only about 4,000 animals. In any wild tigers in Asia are now more than 825,000 people since it occurs in people of the densely populated areas. Zoos are making an important contribution to the protection of the tiger through coordinated breeding programs, such as that established in 1985 European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which currently coordinates 280 Siberian tigers in 90 conversations. But also by educating the world's 600 million zoo visitors each year, collecting donations for protective measures, approximately $ 6 million annually, and providing expertise and active help, zoos are trying to help the Tigers. We are proud that the Cologne Zoo was able to build on its growing success.

Does Cologne have shoebills in the hippo building? I got a picture book that marks the 150th anniversary of the zoo and the illustrations show shoebill in the hippo building.

Zootierliste appears to be down at the moment so I don't know if they are listed as being held there or not.

In short; No more shoebills in Cologne. As far as I know, they haven't had them in at least the last five years.

I visited Cologne zoo (twice) last summer and was most impressed (the last time i visited was about 15 years ago.) Being a waterfowl enthusiast i was delighted with the incredible range of these birds and saw quite a few 'firsts' including Orinoco goose, New Zealand scaup and Rosy-billed pochard (which didn't look real!!) Highlight was the superb Siberian crane that I went back to photograph quite a few times! I have posted a few photos but will add more soon.

While I agree Koln has a good waterfowl collection,it is nothing when compared to the waterfowl collection at Blackbrook Zoo in the UK,which I'm pretty certain is now the largest collection of Waterfowl in the WORLD,and even the Crane collection isn't bad even if they have scaled it back a bit over the last 18 months!

Very promising news regarding the Ratels! Hope if we get some breeding in Europe we may get some more in the UK.

I wonder who the parents of the Orangutan is, I am guessing the father is Bornie, he seems like the most obvious candidate he already has two or three offspring currently at Cologne. Is Cologne's group split into two?

I don't think the Orang group has been split on any of my visits in the last couple of years, but then I tend to spend more time looking at the Douc Langurs and trying to spot the hidden Tamarins and Marmosets within the house.

The Ratel females are called "Honey" (13) and "Beebee" (5, daughter of "Bear" and "Honey"), the male is called "Bear" and is already 16 years old.

Cologne is keeping two groups of Pongo pygmaeus: 0,1 "Tilda" (born ~1967 WILD, Cologne since 05.03.2008 from Studen) alone; 1,0 "Bornie" (born 18.03.1984 at Rotterdam, Cologne since 16.03.1994 from Antwerp), 1,0 "Wousan" (born at Arnhem, 19.05.2008, son of "Guru" and "Cori", Cologne since 2009), 0,1 "Cori" (born at Krefeld, 26.12.1989, Cologne since 2009), 0,1 "Cajunga" (born at Arnhem, 12.06.2001, daughter of "Guru" and "Cori", Cologne since 2009) and 0,1 "Cinta" (daughter of "Bornie" and "Cajunga").

"Bornie" has sired some youngsters before: 1995 0,2 "Nanga" and "Tara" (Bojnice since 2002), 2000 2,0 "Barito" and "Bunyu" (Krefeld since 2008), 2006 "Nele" (Kristiansand since 2009, together with her mother "Noni"), 2012 "Cinta".
