Does anyone have any info on the situation at the elephant house? Is Hank getting the job done?
 
I hadn't realized that a new thread hadn't been made yet for the new year. Any new news from Columbus can be posted here.

To answer loxadontaafricana, I haven't heard much, but I do know that he is getting on pretty well with both of the cows - especially Connie.

Tom Stalf has been named President and CEO of the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, the Wilds and Safari Golf Club. The press release also states that the zoo is adding dinosaurs for Summer 2013. This means the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo (has not yet officially announced it yet), Cedar Point, and Kings Island (who is expanding their display) will all have animatronic dinosaurs in 2013. Who said that they were extinct?

I've always found robotic dinos in zoos to be a complete waste of time and funding. I don't mind the dinos but leave them in their robot dino parks and let zoo carry species that they're trying to save from extinction, not ones that are Extinct.

I would not say they are a waste of funding because they boost a zoos attendance (Brookfield credits their dino exhibit for boosting their attendance by 8%) and if a zoo charges extra money (ie: Brookfield) they can bring in alot of money.

Good point. I guess they aren't total wastes of funding as long as they bring in more than they spend on it.

We certainly realize that they can be helpful financially to a zoo,but I think many of you can relate to this "We hate them anyways" and a zoo like Columbus has zero need for this kind of thing.They already have the water park and golf course both of which we have no problem with

Not a fan of these up-charge attractions, not to mention you've got similar dinosaur attractions at both Cedar Point and Kings Island. I thought I read in one of the articles the attraction will cost $300,000 and they expect to make $500,000 total, so is an extra $200,000 worth it?
 
Amnesiac, I think the idea is that although the temporary exhibit might only bring in 200K or so of upcharge profit, it will attract many people to pay full general admission to get in to see it when they might not have been considering a visit at that time.
 
One of the Pittsburgh Zoo's female orangutans, either Ember or Kimberley, will move to the Jackson Zoo according to the Orangutan SSP's Facebook page. A female named Dumplin will move from Jackson to Columbus.
